Turn your multimeter dial to the lowest ohms setting, usually 20 or 200. Place the two probes on the atomizer your coil is in, one probe on the positive pin (the one in the middle of the 510 connection), and the other on the outside 510 threading, to get the total resistance of the coil in the atomizer.
To do this, set your multimeter to the AC voltage scale and connect one lead to the positive terminal of the coil and the other lead to the ground terminal of the coil. If there is no triggering signal, then the reading will be zero. If there is a triggering signal, then you will get a reading on the multimeter.
How can I tell if my coil is bad? If your multimeter shows a high resistance reading, this could indicate that your coil is bad. You can also try testing the coil with an ohmmeter to see if the reading is stable. If the reading fluctuates, this could be an indication that the coil is damaged.
The ohmic resistance of the coil is around 0.2–3.0 Ω on the primary side and around 5–20 kΩ on the secondary side. The winding ratio of primary to secondary winding is 1:100. The technical structure may vary depending on the ignition coil`s area of application.
Once the engine is cranked, you should look for blue sparks along the spark plug gap. If you can see blue sparks, this proves your ignition coil is working correctly. If you don`t see blue sparks or you see orange sparks, this is a sign that there`s a problem with your ignition coil.
Typical output voltages for modern ignition coils vary from 15 kV (for a lawnmower engine) to 40 kV (for a larger engine). A modern single-spark system has one coil per spark plug.
With a 100:1 turns ratio and relatively low resistance, output is about 45,000 volts.
Place the black multimeter lead on one of the terminals on the CDI box. Touch the red multimeter lead to each of the other terminals on the CDI box, one at a time. If the multimeter reading changes when you touch the red lead to different terminals, then the CDI box is functioning properly.
You should have a resistance reading of at least 3-4.5 ohms. A bad coil will show a higher reading then 3-4.5. Next, place the red or black lead from the meter to the centre of the coil , and to either one of the terminals positive or negative. You want 9500-10000 Ohms, a little less is ok but no more.
All you have to do is start by dividing the primary volts by the number of primary turns: 120 ÷ 75 = 1.6. Since you know the number of turns in the secondary, you would now multiply the 150 secondary turns by the primary current of 1.6:150 × 1.6 = 240. Now you have determined that the secondary voltage is 240 V.

Check the coil impedance on the primary and secondary side. You’ll have to disconnect the battery negative cable so you don’t short something out. Unplug the spark plug wires and the two sets of smaller wires connected to the primary side of the coil. The primary coil reading should be between 3.7 ohms and 4.6 ohms while the secondary (spark plug side) should be between 34.2 k-ohms and 41.6 k-ohms. If the resistance values you measure are outside of these ranges, you need to replace the coil.
