On a lawn tractor, the switch is put under the seat. When the rider sits down, a spring is compressed which activates the switch, and the engine will start. If the rider stands up, the engine shuts off.
One of the biggest signs your power seat switch is going bad or failing is the seat does not move when you push the switch. The seat may not move forward or backwards, or in any of the directions it is meant to move. If the seat is not moving at all, check the fuses to see if they have blown.
There can be a few reasons as to why your safety switch won`t turn back on, but the most typical is a faulty home electrical appliance. Often the toaster or kettle gets the blame, but it could just as easily be any other appliance that is plugged into the power in your home (fridges can be just as guilty!).
If your switchboard does not have a “Test” button on every single circuit, then your home is not fully protected. “If you hit the “Test” button and it doesn`t immediately trip the power, your safety switch is faulty and you should urgently call a Master Electrician to have it replaced.
A typical power seat switch is connected to a motor under the seat. When you press the switch, it sends signals to the motor, which moves the seat forward or backward. If you press the power seat switch and the seat doesn`t move, then the switch may be faulty.
A safety switch can detect the change in the electrical circuit and switches the power off in as little as 0.3 seconds. Fuses and circuit breakers protect against short circuits and current overloads, but only safety switches protect people from electric shock. Safety switches are only a back-up.
There are 4 safety interlock switches on our lawn and garden tractors. The locations vary slightly between Step-Thru® and box frame tractors. See Step Thru Riding Mower for help identifying a Step-Thru® frame tractor.
Checking if your house has RCD Safety Switches installed

RCD Safety Switches are required by law to be fitted at the origin of the power and lighting circuits which will be at the main meter box or distribution board for the residence. They can be identified by the test button on the front of the device.

A safety switch will turn off the electricity in your home within milliseconds of a fault to protect you from a serious electric shock. But the safety switch will only protect you if it is working properly and it is connected to the faulty circuit.
Blown fuse, worn gears or stretched cables

A blown fuse, cables that have been stretched or wrapped around the seat mechanisms, and alignment issues with the gears can all cause the power seat to malfunction.

If the switch is on `OFF`, this means it has tripped. Some new systems will only click off half way when they trip, therefore take a good look to see what your safety switch is doing. If it is still on, but your power is off, then your safety switch is not the issue.
Fusible safety switches combine fuses with the switch in a single enclosure, providing an easy means to manually open and close the circuit while the fuses protect against overcurrent and short circuit.
Under the current Australian standard, a safety switch is manufactured to last for a period of 4000 tests. Unless there is a significant problem with a device, they should last a lifetime.
Safety switches operate both automatically, protecting against circuit faults, and manually in the case of a needed emergency stop or for planned maintenance and repairs.
The track motor may have a broken or pinched wire. Look under the seat and see if any wires are pinched or cut from the seat moving. If the wires are all connected and not pinched, then the track motor may have failed.
The average cost for a Power Seat Switch Replacement is between $327 and $340. Labor costs are estimated between $50 and $63 while parts are priced between $277 and $277.
Types of safety switch

Depending on the protection they provide there are three types of safety switches available.

Riding lawnmower will not start with key. I tried a new key switch and a new solenoid. I checked all safety switches and they checked out OK. I don’t know if the wires for the solenoid are hooked up correctly, because I bought the mower used.
ANSWER : Depend on the make and model of the mower….the safety switches usually are the seat, pto, shift lever, brake and clutch. If any of these are bad…the switch won’t work. Can you cross the starter and have it start? With these safety switches….you can’t just disconnect them to bypass. Most require a loop and running a wire from one side of the switch to the other will usually help you find the one causing the issue. The solenoid comes in about 4 different models. Some ground to the frame and some don’t. Not all key switches are the same either…we stock over 25 different switches and I could show you 7 that look identical but are different.Personally I would start testing from the starter and work my way back…starter, solenoid, safety switches, starter switch. www.nnyparts.com

I have a 20 hp 42 in cutting deck mower. When I let out on the clutch, the engine shuts off. I am sure it is a safety switch, but I cant locate it.
ANSWER : The safety switch is under the seat. It senses weight in the seat, and if it’s not working properly, the engine will die when you let out the clutch. It’s not always a bad switch – it could have simple come loose or the mounting may be broken or misadjusted. Or the connector to it could be loose, or the wire could have been pinched and broken, so check it all out before you replace the switch.

Honda HRR216 does not start at all ,what could be the problem
ANSWER : Hi arshadmalik5…

Check to make sure you are getting fire/spark at the plug, if so then do the following:Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one.If the mower/weedeater/edger is over a couple of years old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instrucitons you get with the carburetor kit. When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws. But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper. That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.
