First, use the following formula to determine how much fertilizer is needed to apply 0.5 pound N per 1,000 square feet to the turf: pounds of N per 1,000 square feet desired for application ÷ percent of N in fertilizer (in decimal form) = pounds of fertilizer per 1,000 square feet.
Spreader calibration consists of two processes. First, the spread pattern must be adjusted to distribute the fertilizer particles uniformly. Second, the amount of fertilizer spread over the desired area must be measured and adjusted, if necessary, to equal the recommended application rate.
To calibrate measurements from visible/NIR/SWIR channels, a gain parameter is derived from the pixel counts over the visible calibration target (the VISCAL unit) during the period when it is illuminated by the sun and the illumination level is constant – this occurs once per orbit.

One Way to Calibrate a Sprayer

Measure the distance in inches between spray nozzles on the boom. Calculate the desired nozzle output (ounces or gallons). Catch one minute`s worth of water from one or two nozzles at the operating pressure. Adjust the pump pressure or ground speed until the desired output is reached.

Place your spreader setting on a low setting (usually one-fourth of the spreader setting range or less). Spread the material over a 50 x 20-foot area (1,000 square feet). If there is material left over, increase your setting. If you come up short, decrease your setting.

How do you know that the Classic Drop Spreader is adjusted properly? i’m using too much fertilizer in comparison to my old Scotts drop spreader and leaving too many burn marks. I thought that the proper adjustment was determined by setting it to 6, open via the handle and checking the arrow on the bottom making sure it’s lining up with the adjustment line.Please advise. Very dissapointed with the new product.

I have an older scotts drop spreader, called a precision flow control model and do not know what settings to use with the Scotts turf builder I have purchased.
ANSWER : Hi,
The best way is to just place a small amount… like 5 lb in the hopper…start with it barely open and see how far you get,,, then compute from there what you need…
The settings they give you are guesamates at best and are often set to place too much… why not??? they are selling you a product!!

I just bought a new Scott’s “Classic Drop” Spreader. I owned a Scott’s drop spreader before and the recommended settings on Scott’s fertilizer bags always worked great.

On Scott’s Turfbuilder fertilizer for Spring (yellow on bag) it recommends one setting for drop spreaders which was 5 3/4.

I drained an entire 14 lb bag with that setting before I was even 1/4 done with my lawn. Usually I can do my whole lawn and have some left over. I even returned the spreader to Home Depot and got another one and another bag of fertilizer and the same thing occured. I adjusted it down to 3 after a bit and still used the entire other 14 lb bag.

ANSWER : Yes, you will need to remove spring and take to hardware store or automotive parts store to match it up. Or you can look online at the parts list for your spreader and order it from Scotts directly.
