Poulan
I brought it from an auction so don,t know the model. It starts fine but just revs with chain going would real like to slow it down to an idle when not cutting

Generally you will find 3 small holes or slots on the pull cord side of the saw you will need a small enough slot screwdriver to fit through the holes. Depending on the age of the saw there will be a low speed adjusting screw a high speed adjusting screw and the idle set screw to establish which is the idle set screw remove the air filter cover from the top of the saw then the air filter you should be able to see the carburetor at this point, the screws should be on the left from the rear or handle end of the saw. The screw you are looking for should have a small spring on it and it should pass through an aluminum post and come against a metal lever of sorts on the top of the carb. When the screw is turned to the right the saw RPM should increase to the left should lower the RPM. When the RPM is lowered and the saw wants to stall the low speed screw will need to be adjusted. the low speed screw should have a blue plastic rotation stop on it and you may have to remove it to adjust the low speed adequately.
There is a new fuel made for 2 cycle engines that has a 50 to 1 rating and it cleans the carb and the internal saw parts. It’s biodegradable and does not go stale in the saw. It’s an amazing product. you should be able to get it at a chain saw dealer.Expensive but worth every penny. It comes in one ltr. or 1 gal. containers. Tune up in a can so to speak.
Hope this helps

Adjusting the Idle Speed on a Poulan Chainsaw
Begin with the saw`s low-speed jet opening 1.5 rotations from the closed position when you adjust the carburetor on your chainsaw. After starting the saw, modify the low jet until the chain stops or nearly stops while maintaining an active throttle.
Turn the screw with a flat-head screwdriver. If the saw is idling too slow, turn the screw clockwise to increase engine speed. If the chain begins turning, turn the screw counterclockwise until it stops. Try to find the sweet spot — where the engine runs smoothly without engaging the chain.
The letters on the screws represent High (H), Low (L) and Idle (T). The H screw regulates the Air/Fuel mix during high RPMs, while the L Screw does the same during low RPMs. The T screw regulates how much fuel is sent to the carburettor while idling until the throttle is pressed.
Turn the idle screw to adjust the idle—turn the screw to the left to increase the RPM or to the right to lower it. When you have adjusted the idle—aim for 650 RPM—reconnect the idle air adjustment valve`s electrical connection. Lower the hood and turn your car off.
There are many factors that can stop your chainsaw from running, including a bad spark plug or dirty air filter. There are simple problems: a broken fuel line, bad fuel, wrongly calibrated high-low adjustment screw. Also, more complex issues like a damaged carburettor or an engine compression problem.
Set idle speed adjusting screw, clockwise to increase rpm, counter-clockwise to decrease rpm. Idle rpm range should be 950 to 1050 rpms. Adjust idle mixture by turning idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine runs poorly.
Over time, the spark arrestor can become clogged with soot. If the spark arrestor is clogged, the chainsaw may run stall or run rough. To unclog the spark arrestor, remove it and clean it with a wire brush. You can also replace the spark arrestor.
It`s important that all idle mixture screws be adjusted the same way so that the output from the carburetor idle circuit is balanced across both idle mixture outlets. One to 1½ turns out is a typical place to start.
Shimano and SRAM, on the other hand, refer to the limit screw as the “high limit screw” and often mark it with an “H” because the rear derailleur is in the highest position there and at the gear with the highest gear ratio.

If your saw idles fine, and then bogs down when pressing the throttle, then adjust your `H` screw by unscrewing. This will increase the amount of fuel to the carburetor under load. If your saw idles fine, then runs lumpy with a lot of smoke when pressing the throttle, then adjust your `H` screw by screwing in.

What is correct adjustment for high and low scews
ANSWER : With the saw warmed up adjust the low for best idle.Adjust the high for best speed then adjust a little richer from that point.Caution……Running at best speed (power) settings which is “lean” will 90% of the time burn the piston……thats why you go a little richer on that setting.
Why 2-Cycle engine poulan chainsaw will not idle
ANSWER : It sounds like you have an air leak from carb to carb adapter.
How do you adjust high, low, and throttle on echo 3400 chainsaw
ANSWER : Ok, this is an easy job, and a quick tune up. First start up your saw, rev it some so it warms up. Next, make sure your saw idles, if not just turn up the idle a bit first before this. With your saw idling on the ground, turn the L screw about 1 turn either side of where it is, and listen to obtain the fastest and smoothest idle, that takes care of the L screw. Now the H screw must be adjusted while the the saw is at full throttle, turn the H screw and listen for maximum and smoothest engine speed. I sugest this be done with the chain and bar removed from the saw. After you adjust the L and H, then adjust idle to suit.
The engine idles way too fast and will not correct with the sow speed adjustment
ANSWER : Make sure that you are adjusting the idle speed screw, not the idle jet screw (L). If you are adjusting the proper screw, then it is possible that the throttle trigger assembly in the handle has a load of sawdust/dirt that blocks proper return to idle. Take the handle apart carefully, and make notes on how the parts go back together. Check at the carburetor throttle assembly to make sure the throttle arm returns fully to the idle speed screw when the trigger is pulled and released slowly. Check the throttle spring as well to make sure it is undamaged. Hope this helps!
Where is the idle adjustment screw on my 42/18
ANSWER : On the left side of saw above primer button is a hole going to the carb, the screw is there below switches.

Craftsman 28cc 16" chainsaw wont idle – Craftsman 38cc 16" Gas Chain Saw
ANSWER : If you’ve already tried the idle adjustment screw and that didn’t work, you need to turn the low side adjustment CCW a quarter turn and try again.
I have a new Husqvarna chain saw and when it is turn on its side it dies whats wrong.
ANSWER : Its hard to say what is causeing this, there will always be a slight difference in rpm as it moves from side to side, the fuel hose should move in the tank and follow the fuel, if the machine is idling to low it may stop as you turn it, make sure the fuel hose is not trapped in the tank.
