From 1993-2001, John Deere produced a new series of lawn and garden tractors: the 425, 445, and 455.
The serial number of a John Deere tractor can, however, be used to determine its year. The 10-character year symbol is included in the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) used by John Deere to identify vehicles. The year of manufacture of your tractor is stated in the VIN`s tenth character.
The first two characters of the serial number represent the year and month of manufacture. The remainder of the serial is a sequential production number, seven digits in length before December 2007 (DM), and eight digits in length after.

John Deere responded with its first “General Purpose” tractor, the Model “GP,” in 1928. A few years later, Deere released its first true row-crop design in 1934 with the Model “A” and its smaller counterpart the “B,” in 1935. These tractors placed the company on a solid foundation within the industry.
1837. John Deere enters the tractor business with two models, the Waterloo Boy and the John Deere Tractor.
The first number denotes the size and family of the tractor and the next three numbers specify the approximated engine horsepower. The first letter following the number indicates the capability and features of the tractor. John Deere currently has four capability levels: D, E, M, and R.
Finding your model number and serial number is as easy as locating the identification tag on your machine. As seen in the example, the model number will be displayed below the MODEL heading (Example: Z235), and the serial number will be underlined on the top-right corner of the tag (Example: 130002).
The tractor model numbers are comprised of four positions. The first number designates the family while the next three numbers represent the approximate engine horsepower. The fifth and sixth positions are represented by a letter. The first letter indicates the level of capability or price a tractor has.
Serial number information. John Deere Waterloo Works recently changed from a 13-digit large tractor serial number to a 17-digit serial number.
John Deere Engine Serial Number Location:

The engine serial number can be found on a plate on your engine, usually on the side of the block.

The John Deere Model M tractor was a two-cylinder row-crop tractor produced by John Deere from 1947 to 1952, with successor models produced until 1960.
John Deere is celebrating 60 years of manufacturing residential lawn equipment (RLE). The journey in RLE began in 1963 with the Model 110 built at John Deere Horicon Works in Horicon, WI.
The 4020 is one of the most popular tractors Deere & Company has ever made. The year 1965 brought the 5020 standard, which was the industry`s most powerful two-wheel-drive model, along with the 1020, 2020, and 54 horsepower (40 kilowatts) model 2510. By 1966, the 4020 accounted for 48% of all John Deere tractor sales.
In 1868, Deere`s business was incorporated under the Deere & Company name.
445 is fuel injection, 425 is carburetor. 445 has a little more power, like 2-5 hp.
Your John Deere model number can be located in one of several different locations depending on your equipment type. While the model number is usually printed in yellow letters on the outside of your equipment, it can also be found on the bottom of the product identification tag (marked in red in photo).

HAVE A JOHN DEERE 318 LAWN TRACTOR, CHANGED POINTS AND CONDENSER, WON’T TURN OVER, TRIED STARTING FLUID IN CARB AND NOTHING. CAN IT BE THE COIL AND HOW DO I CHECK? THANKS
ANSWER : Check the coil impedance on the primary and secondary side. You’ll have to disconnect the battery negative cable so you don’t short something out. Unplug the spark plug wires and the two sets of smaller wires connected to the primary side of the coil. The primary coil reading should be between 3.7 ohms and 4.6 ohms while the secondary (spark plug side) should be between 34.2 k-ohms and 41.6 k-ohms. If the resistance values you measure are outside of these ranges, you need to replace the coil.
