I have 2009 Briggs and Stratton 50 in zero turn mower that won’t turn over. I have changed the spark plug and that did not work. The mower will sound like it is going to start but the engine never catches. When I am trying to start it the battery goes from 12 down to 9.8 on the meter. It has gas. What do you recommend
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Check for spark

Have to get the test plug for small engines

Is the battery years old & partially dead?

Is the oil clean & full

Won’t turn over or won’t start?

Clean the flywheel & ignition coil or whatever
system it has for spark

Check for intake gasket leaks.

Did the meter always go down to 9.8 when it did start?

Your best to work on things & learn– when they work correctly,
not wait for years then be lost

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If the engine starter motor turns over, the starter solenoid needs to be replaced. If the engine starter motor does not turn over once a jumper wire is connected to the two large lugs on the starter solenoid, replace the engine starter motor.
Touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to both of the large terminals at the same time. If the engine turns over and starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced. If the starter motor does not run, the motor itself is probably defective.
Touch the other end of the wire to the positive battery post. When you do this, the starter pinion should move and spin. If it doesn`t, then the starter is bad and will need to be replaced. If the starter does spin and you still can`t figure out why the car won`t start, have a mechanic inspect it more thoroughly.
Riding Mower Clicks but Doesn`t Crank

When you hear a click as you turn the key, a weak battery, bad starter solenoid, faulty wiring, failed starter motor or a seized engine could be the cause. This DIY troubleshooting will help you figure out what to fix.
