Diesel

Have a Mitsubishi starter for a small 3 cylinder diesel engine (K3D)…starter part number (M2T56272) 12v. The starter throws out the 13 sprocket drive wheel but will not crank the flywheel. Out side of the engine the wheel throws out and spins rapidly. Spins… but seems to have no power to turn the flywheel. Whats my problem? Starter or power source…battery seems fine. Please advise.
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Removed starter and tested with new battery and jumper cables…starter worked fine. Replaced battery and cleaned cable attachments…unit started as usual.

When starter throws this would indicate that the interconnect circuits are intact..the engine still would not turn…that leaves the battery, the cable, or a siezed engine. The engine flywheel turned easily…no siezure. That left only the battery and cable. Battery was 3 years old…cable was corroded…bad combination. Battery was replace and corrosion removed from the cable terminals…started first crank.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The electric starter motor or cranking motor is the most common type used on gasoline engines and small diesel engines. The modern starter motor is either a permanent-magnet or a series-parallel wound direct current electric motor with a starter solenoid (similar to a relay) mounted on it.
Diesel engines require a 12 volt starter that is able to spontaneously combust and get the engine running. That`s why even though diesel engines require 12 volt starters, they run on two 12 volt batteries that work in tandem to ensure that the starter has the juice to get the engine running.
Not only on Diesel Engines. Starter solenoids are also fitted to petrol engines. The purpose of the starter solenoid basically , is to eliminate routing the heavy duty starter cable(s) all the way to the starter switch, which would result in an increase Voltage Drop between the battery and the starter.
In general, gas/petrol engines need to spin faster then Diesel engines. Diesel engines also tend to need a little more torque to start, because they use cylinder compression to help start the engine. So a petrol starter might be too fast and too weak to start a Diesel engine.
RE: cranking a diesel engine by hand

Yes, it is possible. With the engine on car use the leg crank: give the car a push, then jump in and clutch 2nd gear.

Block heaters and help diesel engines start on cold days by heating the internal combustion chamber. The block heater heats the coolant to circulate through the block and engine, keeping it warmer and making it easier to start.
Diesel engines do not have a spark-based ignition system, they operate on a principle called `compression ignition`. In diesel engines, the fuel is injected into the cylinder when the pressure and temperature are high enough to make the fuel burn spontaneously (right away, without a spark).
If a starter is used properly, it will last for well over 10,000 starts.
Glow plugs are perhaps the most common form of cold starting aid used in diesel engines. They are small heating elements (Figure 1) that are mounted in the cylinder head and protrude into the combustion chamber (Figure 2).
Using the glow plugs is the most common method of starting a diesel in cold weather. The glow plug heating method raises the temperature of the air in the combustion chamber. The air in the combustion chamber must be compressed to 1/16 of its original volume.
