Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
You will have to disassemble the machine down to the starter/recoil unit. Once you’re there, you can inspect/diagnose what caused the problem and either order some new parts or rewind the starter rope and hope it doesn’t happen again (which it will because of how poorly engineered and cheaply made the units are).

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The problem may be in the recoil starter itself. A tangled coil of rope or a broken spring may be the problem. In many cases the recoil starter is easily replaced as a single assembly. DO NOT attempt do take the starter apart.
One way the starter cord can get stuck is due to hydraulic lock, which is caused by oil getting trapped in the combustion chamber. You`ll need to release the compression and the oil, so remove the spark plug and then give the cord a tug.
Pull the plastic housing of the electric plug to take it out of the wall socket; never pull on the cord. Do not overload electric outlets with too many items plugged in at once.
A Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine can become locked up due to a variety of reasons. Common causes of this type of engine lock-up include a lack of oil in the engine, incorrect fuel and spark plug misfiring.
To make pulling the cord easier, shift the lawnmower height up to start the machine, then lower it back down to your desired grass height to begin cutting.
If the starter rope won`t budge when you try to pull it, the engine may be locked up or the recoil starter may have failed. If you tipped the pressure washer on its side recently, oil may have filled the cylinder, preventing the engine from spinning.
Sometimes, when your starter rope will not retract into your leaf blower, it can be because it is jammed between the pulley and the housing, or it is wrapped around the hub. In this case, you will often be able to fix the symptom by simply opening the machine and untangling or removing the rope from where it is stuck.

My toro lawnmower (brand new) it doesn’t start.\r\…
ANSWER : The drive shaft might just need to be oiled. Turn the mower over and locate the drive shaft, where it goes from the mower’s blade up into the body of the mower. Lubricate the area of the shaft that disappears into the body with WD-40 or another lubricant, then turn the blade by hand (be careful!) and squirt some more oil.Eventually the blade should become easier to turn, and then your pull cord should extend without getting stuck. Good luck!

Pull cord will not pull out for model 358.794765 on craftsman blower/vac
ANSWER : You may have blown your engine. try to move the piston up or down when you take off the spark plug. if it does not move you may have broken a piston ring and the piston may be stuck because of the broken ring. you can also try to check the starter string where it is coiled in the spool. it may be just tangle up. remove the casing and check the string off of the engine.

What to do when craftsman mower pull cord won’t recoil?
ANSWER : Sounds like the spring inside the recoil has either broken or let go so it won’t recoil. If you are lucky it could be the wheel that the cord goes on is seized or stuck. You can take the recoil off most mowers by taking out two or three screws and lifting it off the engine. They can be repaired but it takes time having to be careful the spring won’t spin and hurt you. I have even taken a recoil off another engine and if the holes for the little screws don’t line up just drill little holes beside the old ones and reinstall the little screws.
I even used a 18 volt cordless drill to crank the engine using the bolt on the fly wheel and the right size socket. Leaving the recoil off You have an electric start that way.
