How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die
By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.
Another reason a mower might start and then stop is that the air filter becomes blocked. If this is the problem, then it`s good news because it`s easy to fix since most mower filters are cleanable. Check to see if the filter is blocked and clean as necessary – then try again to see if this has solved the problem.
Why would the engine only run while the choke is on or with repeated manual priming? An engine that requires the choking (partial or full) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
Mower Gas Cap
If the tank is sealed, the fuel becomes air locked, and the mower stalls. This typically happens after a short period between ten and thirty minutes and also depends on factors like weather and gas tank fuel level.
The spark plugs are worn or damaged If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.
Your lawn mower runs for 30 minutes then dies if you are having issues such as a bad spark plug, air problems, a malfunctioning carburetor, or a faulty gas cap. You may even encounter the issue that your lawn mower runs for 5 minutes then dies.
Other things that could cause this issue are bad fuel, weak/colapsed/kinked fuel line, faulty spark plug, faulty ignition/coil, oil over full, clogged air filter, plugged/dirty carburetor, worn engine parts internal rings/valves/etc.
Chokes are designed to close off or “choke” the air supply in order to provide the proper ratio of fuel to air. An engine needs more air as it warms up, so the choke needs to open to allow more air.
A choke valve/cable is designed to restrict the flow of air in the carburettor of an engine. This helps enrich the fuel-air mixture, improving the ability to start an engine in low temperature conditions.
An engine that will fire and run with the choke closed but dies when the choke is opened likely has debris at least partially blocking the fuel passages in the carburetor. In this condition the closed choke provides enough extra fuel to enter the engine to overcome the lack of fuel flowing through the other passages.
Your lawn mower runs for 30 minutes then dies if you are having issues such as a bad spark plug, air problems, a malfunctioning carburetor, or a faulty gas cap. You may even encounter the issue that your lawn mower runs for 5 minutes then dies.
Use Carburetor Cleaner Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

My tractor stalls like it is starved for gas although the gas tank is full. I,ve changed the fuel filter and the gas cap. I’ve cleaned out the gas tank, gas lines, and the carburetor bowl. The problem seems more acute when the gas tank is full or near full. At this time to alleviate the problem, I blow through the gas cap and the fuel filter fills with gas and it runs good again. But as soon as the fuel filter has no more gas, of course, it stalls until I blow on the gas cap. As the tank gets down to about 1/3 full, the engine runs OK. What else could cause this condition?
ANSWER : I had a similar problem with a sears tractor. close to the carbarator is a rectangle box with a rubber hose going to the engine block – remove the hose and spray carb cleaner in the hose wait a few mins and try again – its a vacuum for the carb
Engine will not run but a few minutes at a time
ANSWER : Check your spark plugs, see if they are failing, if they are then your motor is getting to hot. meaning that you either have the fuel mixture set to high or the setting on the spark plugs are not correct causing you to burn hot. Please rate
It won’t stay running. have cleaned the gas tank and it just had a tune up. runs fine then gets rough and quits. If I push the bulb it smooths out and runs fine for a couple of minutes and then begins hesitating again. Now today it ran for about 15 min. and now it won’t start. It wants to. runs for a couple of seconds 5-10 and then quits.
ANSWER : Remove the float bowl and empty the contents out clean and replace
Weed eater starts but won't stay running – Weedeater 19 in 25cc Gas Hedge Trimmer
ANSWER : Probably “gum” and “varnish” build-up clogging the TINY passages [called ‘galleries”] inside the carb!
Engine quits running at full throttle and hot
ANSWER : Sounds like coil but check oil
I have a new echo PB250 Leaf blower and it will not keep running. It starts fine but shuts off after a few seconds.
ANSWER : Sounds like a dirty carb, dissamble it and rinse good with carb clean, be careful when taking the top off it that you get it back together the same spray the white center good and all little holes good. then reassemble, also try to loosen your gas cap maybe first before cleaning carb, you might have a plugged vent in the line coming out of the tank. Good Luck
2010 model 20 hp Briggs motor. Fuel going through fuel line, but not going into carberator. Motor runs good for about 15 min, but after heating up this fuel problem starts. After cooling down for an hour it will run again for about 15 min.\r\nThanks for any advice

ANSWER : Two things:
1 Is fuel coming out of the fuel line. Older mowers have old fuel lines and they tend to get weak and collapse went they warm up with engine heat. Replace the old fuel line.
2 deposits in the carb. take off the air cleaner, start it up and spray a good carb cleaner in the carb until the engine dies. Put some ‘seafoam’ in the gas and a little in the oil and put the air cleaner back on and start the mower and mow on FULL THROTTLE. this should claen out the carb. Yes the mower will run rough for awhile.
these two cheap fixes will solve 85 % of carb problems. GOOD LUCK
The engine will start and run for 5 seconds and stop.I have fuel to the fuel filter.
ANSWER : You have a fuel problem most likely a block in the carby. If it runs with the choke partially on this will verify the cause
