How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The “Deck Belt” goes around the pulleys right above the blades on the deck and then to a double pulley. The “Drive Belt” on your mower goes from the transmission, around an Idler pulley then over to the double pulley I mentioned before. The Drive belt also plays a role in making the wheels turn.
The ground drive belt connects the engine crankshaft to the transaxle pulley to drive the rear wheels. If the belt breaks, the lawn tractor won`t move. If the belt is worn, the lawn tractor moves sluggishly because the belt slips on the pulley.
When the engine is running, the crankshaft pulley turns, allows in drive belt to turn all of the other pulleys it is attached to. There are two kinds of drive belts: V-belts and serpentine belts.
Notched belts can use the same pulleys as cross-section standard V-belts. They run cooler, last longer, and are about 2% more efficient than standard V-belts. Synchronous belts (also called cogged, timing, positive-drive, or high-torque drive belts) are toothed and require the installation of mating grooved sprockets.
Different Types of Belt Drives: There are different types of Belt Drives the Most Common Used Belt Drives are Flat Belt, V-belt, Round Belt, Circular Belt. Flat Belts are Mostly used in factories.
Secondary deck drive belts power the lawn mower blades. Used with primary deck drive belt (M95121) that pulls power from the engine. John Deere belts contain strong material to prevent stretching and roll over which provides smooth engagement and consistent power to the mower deck.
Tight side and slack side

When belt is running over pulley, the friction creates grip on pulley which creates tension on one side of belt which makes the driven pulley to run, this side is called tight side. The other side does not experience same tension, that side is called slack side.

When pulleys are not aligned properly, additional loads are induced. The aim of belt alignment is to align the grooves of the drive and driven pulleys so that the belts run with minimal wear. Proper alignment extends the service life of belts and bearings, reduces vibration and noise levels, and saves energy.
An over-tightened belt can burn out any bearing that the belt rotates on, including alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor, idler pulleys, etc. An over-tightened timing belt can ruin any pulley bearing it is connected with.
Full-grain leather is the best quality and most durable and is the best leather for belts. The material maintains its natural character and develops a beautiful leather patina as it ages. Corrected grain leathers also make good quality belts, but they are less unique.
Serpentine Drive Belts

The most common belt in the modern car and responsible for most of the functions in your vehicle, the Serpentine Belt replaced the multi-belt V-belt system. The serpentine is one belt that winds throughout the entire engine transferring power.

The first digit indicates an eight-rib belt, followed by “P” to identify metric belt sizing, and a “K” showing that this belt conforms to the SAE standard for rib sizing (3.56 millimeters wide for automotive-type serpentine belts). The final series of numbers is the effective length of the belt, given in millimeters.
As we`ve discussed, rubber belts are often the better option for general applications on heavy industrial machinery and drilling equipment. Meanwhile, Kevlar models are great for high-powered devices that are exposed to harmful conditions.
V-belt drives tend to be the quietest bel… V-belt, synchronous belt, roller chain and gear drives will all generate noise while transmitting power.
The open and cross belt configurations are related to flat belt only. In open belt arrangement, the belt proceeds from the top of one pulley to the top of another pulley without crossing. In close belt arrangement, the belt proceeds from the top of one pulley to the bottom of another pulley and thus crosses itself.
There are two belts you need to be familiar with when talking about car maintenance — the serpentine belt and the timing belt. The serpentine belt winds through your engine and carries power to several key components, including the alternator, air conditioning, and power steering pump.
A serpentine belt is used for most makes and models because it`s known to last longer. And because it`s made of a more flexible material, you can remove it and have it replaced with a brand-new one. A drive belt is comprised of material that`s thicker and tougher than a serpentine belt.
Deck Belts, PTO Belts and Drive Belts for Hydrostatic and Gear Drive Transmissions.
MaxPower, Sunbelt and CRAFTSMAN® are among the most popular Lawn Mower Belt brands. While those brands are the most popular overall, you will also find a great assortment from Briggs & Stratton, Ariens and Honda.
For most vehicles, the belt should not be able to be pressed down more than ½ inch. If it can be pressed lower, then the belt is too loose. Note: Manufacturers have their own specifications for how much deflection can be found in the belt. Make sure to check the owner`s manual for your specific vehicle.
The top belt is the power clutch belt, also known as the PTO (power takeoff) belt. This is the easier one to replace because it`s on top and has a spring-loaded hand lever to remove the belt from the lawn mower for deck removal. The lower belt on the deck is called the arbor belt.

There is no specific time length that mower belts need to be replaced. Some belts may last longer than others due to different operating conditions. One thing is for certain though, the more the mower is used, the sooner you will need to consider replacing the mower belt.
