How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The air filter may be clogged. If the air filter is clogged, the engine will get too much fuel and not enough air. As a result, the engine may stall. If the air filter is clogged, replace it.
When your trimmer starts and runs on choke, it could be because the check valve in the gas cap is clogged. Start the trimmer and gently unscrew the gas cap halfway off. Turn the choke off and assess. If the engine is still running, that means the gas cap may be the culprit.
If your trimmer engine idles, but stalls on throttle, check the following parts: the gasket, primer bulb, fuel filter, air filter, fuel vent, fuel line, and carburetor. The repair and symptom guide will help you better identify the part needed to be replaced and how.
The air filter or exhaust port may be blocked. The trimmer may need lubrication and cooling fins or air passages may be blocked. A cordless trimmer`s battery or charger may be faulty.
Why would the engine only run while the choke is on or with repeated manual priming? An engine that requires the choking (partial or full) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment.
Why Does Your Lawn Mower Only Run With Choke On? Your lawn mower only runs with choke on because of a problem with the engine fuel-air mixture system, which can be caused by the carburetor, bad fuel, or air leaks. The choke compels more fuel in the combustion chamber to help the engine to turn over when cold.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the string trimmer for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
If your trimmer won`t turn on, especially if it has not been used recently, you may simply have a drained battery. Plug your trimmer into your charger and see if anything happens. Ideally your trimmer will recognize it has been connected to a power source and charge its battery.
Clean the clipper to remove any hair clipping or grease accumulation. Place your new blades on the clipper and screw them loosely. Align your blades and hold them in place using your other hand. Gently, tighten the clipper`s screws simultaneously to maintain blade alignment.
1) Make sure the battery is fully charged. 2) Be sure that the battery is put into the saw correctly, and secured. 3) There might be debris on the battery, or inside the saw, where the battery connects. If that`s the case this will restrict the correct voltage, in order for the saw to operate.
Enter the RYOBI 18V ONE+ System with the 18V ONE+ 10” String Trimmer/Edger Kit. The powerful motor allows you to trim around small yards with up to 25 minutes of runtime. Experience exceptional performance with just the pull of a trigger.
An engine needs more air as it warms up, so the choke needs to open to allow more air. With a manual choke, you will need to close and open the choke yourself when starting your engine, while an electric choke will control the air supply itself when the engine is started.
It will not damage the engine at all. All that will happen is that it will run richer, thus using more fuel. If you did it for thousands of miles you`d probably end up with more deposits in the engine/exhaust, but even that is easy to sort.
Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

Leaving the choke on while operating will result in excessive fuel consumption, irregular engine power performance and eventually may even damage the engine.
component of carburetor

The choke, a butterfly valve, reduces the intake of air and allows a fuel-rich charge to be drawn into the cylinders when a cold engine is started. As the engine warms up, the choke is gradually opened either by hand or automatically by heat- and engine-speed-responsive…

A blocked or dirty fuel filter

If your engine is trying to run, or starts and quickly stops, you might want to do a quick air filter check. You need air for your initial spark – and if oxygen cannot move readily through the system you will have problems both starting and keeping your whipper snipper running.

So, an air filter might clog over time. Once blocked with dust and debris, it cannot supply the required amount of oxygen to your trimmer` engine resulting in power loss. Find the air filter, take out this component, clean and reassemble it. Replace the part if you cannot reuse it.
The air filter may be clogged. If the air filter is clogged, the engine will get too much fuel and not enough air. As a result, the engine may not start. If the air filter is clogged, replace it.
They are typically labeled L (low speed jet), H (high speed jet), and I (idler jet).
Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, turn the idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine begins to slow. Turn the screw in the opposite direction until the engine again begins to slow. Finally, turn the screw back to the midpoint.
Clutch slipping symptoms

If you are experiencing any of these issues, it could mean that your clutch is going out: Squeaking or unusual grumbling noise when pressure is applied. Difficulty changing gears. The clutch pedal feels sticky, is vibrating or appearing to feel spongey or loose.

Among the first things to check if your trimmer won`t start is the spark plug. In some cases, the spark plug may simply be dirty and need a thorough cleaning. To clean your spark plug, disconnect it and clean the area around it before removing it, advises Briggs and Stratton.

Fuel line positions ?
ANSWER : The longest fuel line, which has the filter attached to it, goes to the brass fitting furthest from the primer bulb. The short fuel line goes directly under the primer bulb. Which hole to put it in doesn’t matter if the lines are the same size. Just choose the shortest path for each. However, if the lines are different sizes, then the longest line (smallest in diameter), goes in the smallest hole of the tank.Jim
