How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Worn bearings about to fail completely often make grinding noises, as well as unusual vibrations. The mandrels holding the mower deck`s cutting blades contain two bearings that need frequent lubrication to keep the bearings working properly. As bearings dry and overheat, seals fail and dirt enters the mechanism.
If your car has an automatic transmission, one of the most disconcerting noises that you can hear coming from your transmission is a grinding noise. When a grinding noise occurs with your transmission, it could mean a serious problem with your planetary gear system.
Bearing, gear and shaft wear are the most common causes of noise. As gear tooth faces and bearing races wear, they develop groves and small pits. While these are only small at first, they will gradually become larger, and as they grow, these imperfections will cause even more noise to occur.
The most common source for humming or whirring transmission noises is low fluid level or fluid contaminated with metal shavings. If the humming sound happens in all gears, there could be a problem with a worn or damaged shaft, shaft end play spacer, or bearing.
If you hear this grinding noise both while you`re driving and idling, it`s possible that worn-out bearings are to blame. If the grinding noise comes when you shift, it`s likely due to a worn clutch. Grinding when you turn a corner could be due to a CV joint that needs to be replaced or another suspension issue.
If your transmission makes a grinding noise when you shift gears, you are likely experiencing friction between gears due to insufficient transmission fluid, worn transmission linkage, maladjusted binding, or a “dragging clutch.” If you hear grinding sounds when shifting from neutral to any gear, you may be dealing with …
The grinding sound you hear is that collar colliding with the end of the gear if it is spinning at a faster or slower speed than the shaft in your transmission. Modern transmissions minimize this grinding by adding a synchronizer ring before the gear that helps get the collar and input shaft up to speed during a shift.
My Gears Are Clunking, Clicking Or Rattling

These noises usually mean that your gearbox or engine is on it`s way to failing, which can be catastrophic if you are driving at the time. For this reason, you should try and have the car collected rather than driving it to the garage.

GRINDING THE TRANSMISSION GEARS WOULD ONLY DAMAGE THE GEARS IN THE TRANY. Probably thousands, but why not learn to change smoothly. You`ll be very satisfied with yourself and save a lot of money. Grinding gears does not affect the clutch.
The mower surges when the carburetor sucks air through an unsealed gap in the air intake manifold instead of through the air filter. Dirty carburetor. Clogged fuel jets inside the carburetor commonly cause the lawn mower engine to surge. Clogged jets can`t provide the right mix of air and fuel to the engine.

I have a 20073A self propelled lawn mower that makes a grinding sound when I start out mowing or turn the mower around. I replaced the metal gears twice and that quiets it for awhile, but then the noise returns. The gears I replaced were worn down like there’re not meshing correctly. Is there a fix for this problem?
ANSWER : Assuming the pinion gears and wheel gears match, (sometimes dealers make mistakes too.) Check the bearings behind the wheel adjusters and the retainer-bushing Hoc. If they are in good shape lubricate the pinion gears and wheel gears w/ hi temp lithium grease.
