What lubricant should be used in the tiller transmission case? In the past the rule was: For partial fill-ups (a few ounces or less) use SAE 140, SAE 85W-140 or SAE 80W-90 weight gear oil with an API rating of GL-4 or GL-5. For full replacement use SAE 140 or SAE 85W-140 gear oil with an API rating of GL-4 only.
All Honda power equipment engines will use the Honda 10w-30 weight motor oil.
The oil level must be at the approximate centerline of both gearboxes. In non stainless steel gearboxes the oil will flow between both gearboxes, so if one gearbox is above the other the lower gearbox must be 100% full.
For normal cars/light commercial vehicles often it is somewhere between 1.5-2.5L, and may take a specific gear oil, engine oil or even AT fluid.

Engine Maintenance

Because your tiller operates in dust and dirt, oil and filter changes are more critical than for lawn mowers and most other lawn and garden machines. At the very minimum, you should change the oil after 50 hours of use or at least once a year. If the oil looks dirty, change it more often.

Many engines will take between five to six quarts, although some small four-cylinder engines may need closer to four quarts. On the other hand, bigger engines can take up to eight or nine quarts. There should be a total of 2.6 litres (2.7 qt.) How often should manual gearbox oil be changed?
1 KG of oil is equal to 1.1 Litre | GheeStore.
Gear Reducer Torque = 9550 * Motor power / Rated Power motor`s input revolution*Ratio* gear reducer efficiency. The above calculation is the torque equation. Motor power = torque ÷ 9550 × Rated power`s motor input speed /Ratio /service factor.
No. Never use a multi grade engine oil in a gearbox. Only use the recommended fluid as defined by the manufacturer.
In other words, your Honda will need 3.7 quarts of fresh oil each time it has an oil change.
Most engines require anywhere between 5 to 8 quarts of oil. For example, a 4-cylinder engine will require at least 5 quarts of oil and a 6-cylinder engine will require around 6 quarts of motor oil.
Automatic gearboxes: Valvoline ATF oils and Valvoline Gear Oils GL-4. A continuous variable transmission (CVT) gearbox: Valvoline CVT oils.

On our 2-stroke engines in oil bath, we need a specific grade generally of 20W40, the greased gearbox / clutch unit does not heat up at the same speed or at the same temperature as an engine, moreover, this oil must have a very specific protection and self-cleaning grade, because the oil soiled by clutch residues …

How do I check the oil on my Mantis Tiller with 4 stroke Honda Engine? THe manual that came with the tiller says it holds 3.4 oz of 4 cycle oil, but when I lay it on it’s side the dip stick does not record any oil even when it is full. Because everyone thinks the oil should register on the dipstick too much oil has often been added. This leads to overfilling the crankcase to the point that oil runs out the air cleaner etc when the engine is operating.
ANSWER : Tip the unit up with the front on the ground, the dip stick will be on the lower part of the engine & comming out at an angle

Motor runs but the tines want turn – Honda 25cc 4-cycle Mini Tiller
ANSWER : Either the clutch is gone or the transmission gear is stripped. These need to be properly greased annually so that this happens less. The transmission replacement can be done but the dealer will charge you about what you paid for it ($250) or if you know someone handy they can order the parts here: and rebuild it for you. It would cost about $85 for a full transmission rebuild.

Good luck.

My honda tiller fg110 do not starts, before it had a lot of smoke
ANSWER : First make sure the fuel is fresh. If it has been in the tiller or the fuel can for a while get rid of it and go buy new fuel. If it is a 4 cycle make sure there is no oil mixed with the fuel. Give this a try and let me know. Wed can go on from there.

Tiller tines will not turn. Engine runs fine…
ANSWER : Well hopefully it’s not the transmission, as sometimes these tend to go. Another common but cheaper repair are the two bearings where the tines connect to the unit.

MORE THAN LIKELY.. The bearing is located above the worm gear housing, the part connected to the tines beneath the guard. This removal can be somewhat frustrating but if you remove it and remove the engine flange you’ll be able to manually spin the drive shaft and see if it’s the worm gear housing/lower bearings or if it’s the more likely bearing on the clutch drum or the clutch itself.
