How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
When your trimmer starts and runs on choke, it could be because the check valve in the gas cap is clogged. Start the trimmer and gently unscrew the gas cap halfway off. Turn the choke off and assess. If the engine is still running, that means the gas cap may be the culprit.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the string trimmer for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
If the engine is not revving up and cuts out before you reach higher revs then you need to do the following checks: Fuel: Make sure it is fresh and correctly mixed (see `Starting Issues`). Air filter: Make sure it is clean and unclogged. Fuel cap: Make sure it`s hand-tight.
Why would the engine only run while the choke is on or with repeated manual priming? An engine that requires the choking (partial or full) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment.
If your bike is only running with the choke on, it`s probably because it`s running too lean. This can be caused by a few different things: All internal combustion engines need three things to run: fuel, air, and spark. If any of these are missing or not working properly, the engine won`t run.
If a motorcycle or ATV only runs with the choke on, it`s because the richer “choke on” mixture is actually closer to the engine`s normal operating fuel mixture than the leaner “choke off” mixture. So when the choke is turned off, the engine gets too little fuel and too much air for it to run and it stalls.
The clutch engages the clutch pads to spin the trimmer head. If the clutch assembly is defective, the clutch will not disengage the clutch pads, and the trimmer head will continue to spin, even at low speeds. If the clutch is defective, replace it. (Note: some string trimmers do not have a clutch.
Use a mix of water and dish detergent on the string trimmer head to clean off any grease, dirt and debris. Locate the air filter cover and remove it to make sure the air filter is clean. Replace it approximately every 90 days, based on wear and tear.
All Weed Eater brand two-cycle gas trimmers use a 40:1 ratio of gas to oil. That`s equal to 3.2 ounces of oil to 1 gallon of regular gas. The gas should be 87 octane with no more than 10 percent alcohol. The oil must be formulated for two-cycle engines.
The most likely culprit is a dirty or clogged air filter. Issues with your fuel pump or fuel filter can also cause your engine to idle then die with any throttle. If you have an older car, it could also be a bad carburetor.
If the line is too thick or too thin it can continuously feed the line. Make sure you are using the correct line thickness rated for your machine. The spool houses the line for the trimmer and has the line wound around it. It is located inside the trimmer head.

My hedge trimmer will not start… Put in new gas
ANSWER : It’s not getting gas, due to being gummed up with old gas. Remove all of the old gas and mix up a batch of fresh gas&oil. Also get some carb cleaner. Put just a little of the gas&oil mix plus an equal part carb cleaner. Try to start it just to work the new mixture through the carb. You might use the spray start to help pull the new gas through. If it fires up on the new gas&oil&carbcleaner mix, shut it off and let it sit for an hour or two. Drain it out and try just a little gas&oiil without the carb cleaner. If all is well fill the tank. If not, repeat the whole process. If you can’t clear the gum this way you may have to remove the carb to clean it.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Gas leaking out of center hole on gas cap sears weed trimmer 358795150
ANSWER : I had same problem and got a replacement cap at a small engine shop. Seems there is a baffle in the cap to allow the tank to vent and to close off to prevent fuel leaking. Appears rubber baffle deteriorates over time.

Will cut off after five min of running .does it need a new coil
ANSWER : Check gas cap first for vent being plugged as this will create a vacuum in the tank and prevent fuel delivery. Test when problem occurs by immediately loosening cap and retightening to see if restarts right away you might even hear air going into the fuel tank.
If it doesn’t restart, possible coil. Coils are usually affected by the increase of heat when running having too high resistance in the electrical windings or possible moisture.

Hedge trimmer put away for winter. will run but not stay running. put in new diaframs for carb . same results. i am questioning the gas cap now. is it possible that it can cause a problem with keeping this trimmer running Paul
ANSWER : YES, this system relys on pressure and the ionic nature of gasonline to pull the fuel through the system. If the gas cap is off or damaged where a seal is no longer possible, try taping it up with duct tape and see if that helps

GAS TRIMMER WON’T START – BUT ALMOST STARTS WHEN I POUR GAS IN THE SPARK PLUG POCKET, THE GAS THERE DRIES/DISAPPEARS FAST. MUST BE A GAS LINE SITUATION? WHAT SHOULD I DO?
ANSWER : The gas is going into the the crankcase. When the piston goes down it opens the ports and allows the gas to go down untill it could fill the crankcase. Start by blowing compressed air into the spark plug hole and allowing the piston to go to it’s lowest position. This will usually remove any liquid gas from the crankcase. Next get yourself a small spray bottle and fill it with the same gas mixture your trimmer uses. Now you can spray a small amount into the spark plug port, replace the spark plug, full choke and pull till it pops. set to half choke and pull. I have also sprayed into the carb but you must open the throttle to allow the gas to enter the combustion chamber. Spray, close throttle, pull choke and pull. You may need to do this a few times for it to start. After it starts let it run at half choke for awhile until it warms a bit then open choke and go to full throttle. If this dosen’t work it’s possible to have other problems.
