I got a riding mower 2 yrs old and has not been used for 1 yr it now has gas in the oil and is getting very hot after 5 min of running. What can cause this. It also backfires a bit.
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
You have a bad antibackfire valve. It is located on carburator below the fuel bowl. You can replace it, or as I advise others, install an inline shutoff valve. Turn the fuel valve on to start it, then turn it off when you shut the engine down.

However, the capacity of the oil tank on a 4.5-hp Craftsman lawnmower engine is 20 fl. oz. So, for regular oil changes, fill the tank with 20 fl. oz.
SAE 10W-30 4-Cycle Lawn Mower Oil (20 oz) | CRAFTSMAN.
Usually the problem is in the float bowl. The float needle and seat need replacing. When it`s faulty, gas doesn`t stop flooding the carburetor and gets into the cylinder and mixes with the oil. You must also change the oil when this happens as your oil is now ruined.
Can You Use Synthetic Lawn Mower Oil? Yes! We have recently modified our engine oil recommendations to state that you may now use a synthetic 5W30 or 10W30 oil in all temperature ranges.
Yes. 5w30 and 10w30 are both 30 weight oils and the exact same thickness in your engine when it is at operating temperature.
The Full-Synthetic SAE 5W-30 SN Motor Oil is designed for 4-Cycle lawn mowers and snow blower engines. It has better low- and high-temperature viscosity performance and extended drain intervals.
There is no difference between 4-cycle oil and regular engine oil; they are the same. Common engine oils used in lawnmowers are SAE30, 5W30, and 10W30. A lawnmower engine will start without oil, but you must never do so; even running it for a short time will cause serious engine damage.
Two-stroke (or 2-cycle) engines require a mixture of fuel and oil be added to the fuel tank. This mixture results in both engine combustion and lubrication. Operating a 2-Stroke engine on gasoline alone will result in engine failure.
Lawn mowers that run on internal combustion engines burn gasoline as fuel, and like any engine with metal parts, your lawn mower requires oil to lubricate the pistons and other moving parts. The oil reduces friction between moving metal parts and protects the life of your engine.
Riding mowers:
Oil capacity is typically 48oz or 64 oz*. Change engine oil every 100 hours or annually, which ever comes first.
A riding lawn mower typically takes between 1.5 and 2.5 quarts of oil, depending on the size and model of the mower. It is important to check the owner`s manual for the specific type of mower and engine you have, as different models may require different amounts of oil.
