It sounds like the crank case breather is back leaking fuel. But I need to know what model ENGINE you have first. There will be model number stamped on the block or a piece of shrouding on your engine.. The model of the lawnmower WILL NOT help me as different engines are used under different mower brands. Get that number and post it and I can probably resolve this issue for you.

What causes fuel to leak into my engine oil? The fuel shut-off valve isn`t closed properly. Fuel float in the carburetor being stuck in the open position due to gumming (caused by stale fuel) or debris.
A minimum 87 octane containing up to 10% ethanol is recommended. Do not use fuels with 15 to 85% ethanol, these fuels are not approved for use in small engines. Mixing oil with gasoline or modifying your 4-Cycle small engine to run on alternative fuels will damage the engine and will not be covered under warranty.
The Causes of Fuel Dilution in Engine Oil
This occurs because most seals are not perfect (nor are the cylinders perfectly rounded), or there is an opening through the cylinder crosshatches, and this causes the migration of fuel and exhaust gases into the areas where the oil is used.
Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of our engines. Check oil level regularly. Air-cooled engines burn about an ounce of oil per cylinder, per hour. Fill to mark on dipstick.
The fuel doesn`t burn off completely. Reduce the mileage change interval to the strictest change interval indicated by the manufacturer.

Yes! We have recently modified our engine oil recommendations to state that you may now use a synthetic 5W30 or 10W30 oil in all temperature ranges. We recommend the use of Briggs & Stratton Fully Synthetic Premium Long-Life Oil.
Can I Use 5W-30 Instead Of SAE 30? Both oils have a “30” hot viscosity rating. This means SAE 5W-30 oil has the same flow rate as SAE 30 at operating temp. So, technically it`s fine to use SAE 5W-30 oil in place of SAE 30.
There`s not much difference between 10W-30 and 10W-40 motor oil. What sets them apart has more to do with temperature fluctuations and engine load. For moderate weather, either engine oil grades should work fine.
If the lawn mower leaks gas the carburetor bowl gasket on the bottom of the carburetor might be dried out or missing. If the leak is coming from the bottom of the carburetor, try replacing the carburetor bowl gasket.
Gas is less dense than both and will float to the top. Petroleum produced by source rocks will migrate into a “reservoir” rock.

ANSWER : I think Poulan uses a 40:1 ratio to one gallon of gas, however I have always used 50:1 the same as my sthl saws with no issue. I would rather have more oil mix that to little.
