If the pump is not turning on at all, you may want to start with the obvious and check to make sure the breaker is not turned off or tripped. If you reset a tripped breaker and it continues to trip, you may have an issue with the wire running to the pump or the pump motor itself.
Tiny leaks in the supply pipe, leaks in fittings, intakes that can draw air when the water is rough, or dropping water levels can cause a pump to lose its prime. Faulty foot valves allow pumps to lose their prime between operating cycles.
Too Little Air in the Reservoir Tank These tanks depend on air pressure within to regulate the pressure switch. If the inside air pressure drops, the tank will not trigger the pressure switch correctly, causing the pump to switch ON and OFF erroneously.
System shutoff Almost two-thirds (64%) of sprinkler failures occur because the equipment is shut off. This can happen when a building is vacant or under construction or when there are system problems involving leaks or other impairments.
Clogged sprinkler heads: You may have a clogged sprinkler head if the head doesn`t rise and there is no water. Dirt, sand and other debris build up in the sprinkler head filters. To clean a filter: Turn off your water, lift the pop-up riser, remove the nozzle and the filter, clean the filter and return to the nozzle.
LIFT TOO HIGH FOR PUMP SPEED OR IMPELLER DIAMETER If you`ve undersized the pump for the suction line, it will not be able to create the low-pressure area it needs to prime.
Pump Priming is the process of removing air from the pump and suction line. In this process the pump is been filled with the liquid being pumped and this liquid forces all the air, gas, or vapor contained in the passage ways of pump to escape out. Priming maybe done manually or automatically.
Blocked Water Supply Piping Clogged piping or water filters can cause short water-pump cycling. The blockage will cause water pressure to rise quickly when the pump switches on. It`s common for people to replace their pump controls only to find that a clogged filter was the real problem.
If the water supply pipes become clogged, the pump will short cycle. A clog in the water supply creates high water pressure very quickly. The best way to check for this is to check the water filter. If it`s dirty or blocked, replace it, and you may restore function.
The most common cause of a stuck sprinkler head is dirt and debris. If dirt, rocks, leaves, or grass gets caught between a sprinkler body and the sprinkler riser, it can clog up the works and stop the riser from sliding back into the body. Resulting in a sprinkler head that won`t go down.
If your sprinkler system isn`t working in all zones, chances are the problem is localized to the one or two zones that aren`t working. Each zone has its own valve, so that`s a good place to look. Head out to each valve and see if it is opened fully, broken, rusted, or stuck. Turn valves to the left to open them more.
By simply examining the sprinkler heads, you might notice that the adjustment of sprinkler heads is not proper. If so, you can simply turn the sprinkler head anti-clockwise for increasing the flow of water from the sprinkler head.
The water pump may have suffered internal damage to a seal, bearing, or impeller. The motor will keep running but the pump is unable to develop normal pressures. “Damage” may include a broken impeller blade, scale or debris clogging the impeller or other pump components, or a failing pump seal or bearing.
There could be blockages in the system that is restricting flow. It is possible that the pumping system or mains switching system supply is designed for low flow. Clean all filters and strainers to ensure there are no blockages. If the flow is still not acceptable contact the pump manufacturer, repairer, or retailer.
Your pump can`t push water if it doesn`t have access to it. First, check to see if there is anything keeping water from getting to the pump, be it a large rock or debris, leaves, a clogged skimmer net or opening, a jammed skimmer flap, or just a skimmer mat that has gone too long between cleanings.

We have a Flotec 3/4 HP submersible pump, it was already here when we moved in, we have lived here for 3 yrs, so we dont know how old it is. After living here for 2 yrs, it started to get very noisy, like a groaning noise. We replaced it w/ a l/2 HP Wayne(our mistake) We got water in the basement b/c the wayne pump quit running. We put the Flotec back on. Trying to find a replacement, but stores are all out. Question is, do you think we can rely on the Flotec that is making the strange noises? Thanks, Chris
ANSWER : Take strainer off to see if fravel stucj. if not, motor bearing may be shot. I would replace. I like wayne.
Just installed,having problems after priming,i can’ t enough water coming up.is there adustments on pump that i need to know?
ANSWER : There are no adjustments for pump. Amount of water it will pump is set by pump design. The way I read your posting is the pump picks up prime but not enough delivery. Check your connections (pipes) make sure your not sucking air on any of them. check for obstructions in discharge. Are you sure the water source will handle a pump this size? Its possible also the foot valve is stuck.

ANSWER : Pump self primes after the housing is initially filled with water. Failure to do this will reslut in the unit not drawing up the water and could potentionaly damage the unit.
I have a 1/2 horse wayne shallow well pump. At times the water in the house slows to a trickel. This will happen for about 40-120 seconds then the pump seems to kick on and the pressure is restored. Sump pump hums and then kicks breaker. Will not pump. I cleaned everything, still have problem
ANSWER : Pump motor is jammed causing overload and resulting breaker trip. Try to turn the pump shaft by hand, it should be very easy to turn. If there’s any resistance check for blockage.
How do I remove the clamp on a FP5172 so I can replace the pump body. I have a small crack in the front of the pump body. Could I use some type of epoxy to seal the crack?
ANSWER : Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com. Once you remove the nut use a flat tip screwdriver to release the wedged-on band from the plastic housings. They sometimes stick pretty good if they were in service over many years so do not be afraid to work the band pretty hard if it won’t budge at first. When replacing the band use a mallet or similar tool to tap down the band as you retighten the nut. Each time the nut tightens down work the mallet around the band and tighten the nut some more. The pump will not continue to run after starting, it runs for 5 seconds and then stops, until the next attempt to detect water, the pump is sitting in three feet of water. The pump will not continue to run after detecting water.

I have a pressure booster pump installed which turns on automatically when we open the tap and turns off by itself when we close the tap, but when power goes and comes back(common in india), the pump will turn on even with no tap opened and does not turn off automatically and goes on running, some kind of airlock problem I think, when we just shut off and on water input several times, it again starts working well
ANSWER : Check to see if the output pipe has water in it when the pump swutches off the pump needs to be primed at all time what we normally find cases like this is the pump is higher than the supply or there is an air pocket on the output where the pressure sensor is
