Tractor will shut down as if it has run out of fuel. Upon restart it requires constant turning over, sometimes a shot of ether to boost the start cycle.
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
The tractor I have operated had a sediment bowl/ water trap.Try cleaning that out.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If the RMPs surge up and down in your lawn tractor engine, check the fuel filter, air filter, springs, and gasket. We will help you fix this problem with our repair guide.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
If your lawnmower`s engine is surging it could be a problem with the carburetor. The carburetor mixes air and fuel to the perfect ratio for combustion. There are passages and nozzles (called jets) that route the fuel through the carburetor. The jets meter the precise amount of fuel that is needed for combustion.
Engine hunting and surging at idle is usually caused by a fuel delivery, air leak, or governor system problem. Cleaning/overhauling the carburettor, adjustment of the governor, and/or changing the air filer may be required.
Often this is a result of dirt buildup in the air intake. Other times it can be a problem with a cracked intake tube. If the IAC motor`s vacuum port is leaking, this can be another cause of high engine idling. The leak could be sourced at the seal, or more often, in one of the attached hoses.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
If an engine is not getting enough fuel (this is called “running lean”), due to fuel pressure (regulated by the fuel pump and regulator), restricted fuel injectors, a vacuum leak or really anything that throws off the fuel mixture going in to the engine, this can cause the surge.
Surging and Lagging

Another good indication that your spark plugs are dirty or worn is if your vehicle experiences surges of speed, resulting in a jerking acceleration. These surges occur because your spark plugs are not igniting the fuel in your engine at the proper rate, resulting in an uneven speed.

Engine Surging

In most cases, a faulty fuel pump will not draw enough fuel out of the tank. In some cases, it will draw too much fuel out of the tank and your engine will surge sporadically as you drive your automobile. You will continue to have this problem until you replace the fuel pump.

Engine surging is different from a difficult start or a no-start problem. “Surging” does not refer to a knocking engine or one that idles rough or stalls. Engine surging is when an engine starts easily and accelerates smoothly, however after a few minutes at a steady speed, it either surges in speed or misfires.
Diesel engine runaway is a rare condition affecting diesel engines, in which the engine draws extra fuel from an unintended source and overspeeds at higher and higher RPM, producing up to ten times the engine`s rated output until destroyed by mechanical failure or bearing seizure due to a lack of lubrication.
Air intake shut off systems are the only proven, reliable method to stop a diesel engine once it has begun to run away.
This could be caused by a few things but in all cases unregulated fuel and air are entering the combustion chamber, effectively causing the engine to go crazy without you telling it to. To stop it is simple; cut the fuel/air/ignition supply. If one of these is missing combustion can`t occur.
Worn Spark Plugs or Spark Plug Wires

Your vehicle may experience misfires and jerking while accelerating. Similarly, if spark plug wires or ignition coils have expired, the vehicle may experience a similar behavior to bad spark plugs.

Replace the sensor with a compatible one and correctly install the crankshaft position sensor to ensure that the engine runs optimally and safely. A qualified technician can prevent further issues with RPM fluctuations while driving by installing the sensor correctly.

Install a new selenoid & I hook up the battery, And the tractor want to start??? I think the wireing is hook up Okay. Don
ANSWER : Hey don,

The key switch supplies power to the coil, it has nothing to do with the cranking circit. When you press the start button it supplies power to the solinoid, that in turn activates the starter motor. You can crank the engine even if you dont have power to the coil. Which is what I think you have happening. On the coil it has two small wire under two small nuts with a big wire in the middle going to the distributor. The two small wires are marked with a + and -, The + side should have 12v with the key turned on and 0v with it in the off position. The – Negitive side goes to the points. Check the points for burned, stuck, worn out lob on cam, if you have no spark. If you have spark, you need to address the fuel, Try spraying carburetor cleaner ( not either) into the carburetor to see if it fires then quits, this proves you have a fuel issue.

Make sure your battery is fully charged, and that the ground is a good one.

Hope this helps
