the motor I get spark but it is weak. Again nothing with the spark plug. Any ideas what to do next? I have checked with an ohm meter all the wires and they are all good. I have taken the white ground wire that grounds the coil to shut the motor off off and it doesn’t change anything. The motor died last fall and I took it to my local John Deere dealer, they billed me $540. Brought it home and put in shed. Pulled out two weeks ago, made it about 100 yards and it died again. Any ideas to try on my own before I break down and take it in again.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Loss of spark is caused by anything that prevents coil voltage from jumping the electrode gap at the end of the spark plug. This includes worn, fouled or damaged spark plugs, bad plug wires or a cracked distributor cap.
Turn on the ignition switch and pull the starting cord quickly. You should see a spark in the plug gap. Since the spark may be faint, it may help to do the test in a dark area. If there is no spark, check for a broken or shorted (bare) lead wire or bad switch.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
If your trimmer won`t turn on, especially if it has not been used recently, you may simply have a drained battery. Plug your trimmer into your charger and see if anything happens. Ideally your trimmer will recognize it has been connected to a power source and charge its battery.
Whipper snipper engines have a device called a magneto for creating a spark at the plug to ignite the fuel / air mixture in the cylinder. If you don`t get a spark at the plug and have tried a new plug and checked for loose wiring without success, this module may be at fault and need to be replaced.
It is possible that your shaver does not turn on or move because it is dirty. There can be hair or dirt particles stuck inside it, causing the shaving heads to be blocked. To fix this problem, properly clean your shaver. If possible, remove the shaving head and clean your shaver from the inside as well.
To test a coil with a multimeter, you will need to connect the leads of the multimeter to the coil terminals. Once the connection is made, you can set the multimeter to the resistance mode and measure the resistance of the coil.
Crank the Ignition and Inspect for Spark Have someone turn the ignition so that you can inspect the plug. Make sure the spark is strong and blue in color. If the spark is weak and dull orange, it`s likely that it`s not strong enough to ignite the engine`s air and fuel mixture.
Spark plugs that haven`t been changed for a long time can become one with the cylinder head. Fortunately, it`s possible to repair damaged threads instead of scrapping the head.
Burned. Blisters on the insulator tip, melted electrodes, or white deposits are signs of a burned spark plug that is running too hot. Causes can include the engine overheating, incorrect spark plug heat range, a loose spark plug, incorrect ignition timing or too lean of an air/fuel mixture.

F710, There is no spark, I bought a new spark plug and a new coil, no spark. However, if I stick a screw driver into the cap and check against the motor I get spark but it is weak. ANSWER : Hi Lloyd
Make sure you are getting spark at the spark plug, to do this:Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting a bright blue spark at the spark plug. You do this by grounding the plug on the head of the engine and cranking the engine or by pulling the crank rope…watching the plug for spark. If you are getting a nice blue spark then skip A below and go to B.
A…If you do not get a nice blue spark then you may need to replace the electronic module.Note: If you have to replace the module be sure to measure the position it is in, it is critical to starting. The clearance can be measured with a “business card”…use the card for the right clearance between the coil and the flywheel.Take a picture for later reassembly.
B…Also take some fine grit sandpaper (not emery) and lightly sand the flywheel where the magnet is located to clean any rust or corrosion from the magnet area. Please rate meBud

HAVE A JOHN DEERE 318 LAWN TRACTOR, CHANGED POINTS AND CONDENSER, WON’T TURN OVER, TRIED STARTING FLUID IN CARB AND NOTHING. CAN IT BE THE COIL AND HOW DO I CHECK? THANKS
ANSWER : Check the coil impedance on the primary and secondary side. You’ll have to disconnect the battery negative cable so you don’t short something out. Unplug the spark plug wires and the two sets of smaller wires connected to the primary side of the coil. The primary coil reading should be between 3.7 ohms and 4.6 ohms while the secondary (spark plug side) should be between 34.2 k-ohms and 41.6 k-ohms. If the resistance values you measure are outside of these ranges, you need to replace the coil.

I have John Deere GX345. It does not start consistently. When it doesn’t start the plugs have no spark. The problem is intermittent. All electrical connections look clean and no corrosion. Re- seated all connections. Fuel flow is good because I can smell raw fuel while cranking the motor. I replaced the fuel lines last year. Thank you for your help. Daryl Witowski
ANSWER : Look for a small silver box with 1 wire on it mounted to the motor. It is a temp sensor and will keep it from firing…Just had to replace mine…

I have changed the fuel filter on a John Deere L130 garden tractor and the engine is still not getting gas. Is there a fuel pump or other part which would stop the flow of gas to carbuerator?
ANSWER : Underneath carb bowl should be a wire. Unplug it and remove ( unscrew) electric gas shutoff. Replace.
