Engine won’t shut off

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If the engine continues to run just as before you turned it off – as if you hadn`t turned it off at all – your ignition and fuel system are not shutting down. In that case, your car has an electrical problem that needs to be addressed. Either your ignition switch element or a power relay needs to be replaced.
The number one reason for your diesel engine suddenly failing to shut off is loss of vacuum to the fuel injection pump shut-off valve. And the number one reason for sudden loss of vacuum is a leak somewhere in the lines.
If your car is not turning off, and you are unable to remove the key, that may be sign that the ignition lock, or possibly switch, has gone bad. A failed ignition lock or switch can sometimes fail, and jam mechanically, leaving you unable to insert, turn, or remove the key.
Diesel engines are typically left running when not in operation for short periods in time. Since a large percentage of wear occurs at startup, the constant cycling of turning the engine on and off saves in wear over that of a gasoline engine. It also reduces the heat cycles and keeps operating temperatures constant.
Air intake shut off systems are the only proven, reliable method to stop a diesel engine once it has begun to run away. Don`t wait until it`s too late to protect your people and equipment from this preventable disaster.
There are only two ways to stop a diesel engine, cut off the fuel or the air. The easiest approach to stop a boat engine is to cut off the air. This approach leaves the engine perfectly service worthy and it will start again immediately.
The most prominent safety switch on many Kubota tractors is located right under the seat. To troubleshoot Kubota safety switch issues, it is often necessary to check both the switches and the wiring. For example, on an L3940, two wires run from the seat frame to the exposed switch.
The Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft is an efficient means of transferring mechanical power between farm tractors and implements.
In a car with a key ignition, turn the key to the off position and remove it from the ignition. In a car with push button ignition, press the start/stop button to stop the engine.
A car can drive continuously for approximately 8-9 hours before it will require refueling, depending on its tank capacity. There is no mechanical limit on how long a car can drive without stopping, provided it is well maintained, refueled, and has sufficient engine lubrication.

My Z5426 won’t start. When I pull out the choke and turn the key, gas starts leaking out of the exhaust system just before it gets to the muffler. Last time it did start, it ran really rough. So, I turn off the engine and then tried to restart and that’s when I noticed the fuel leak.
ANSWER : Maybe bad fuel, fuel line leaking, flooding of the carburetor, since it did start and ran rough I am assuming that the gas was left set and more then likely this gummed up the carburetor, you will have to clean/rebuild it. If you have a can of carburetor clean you may be able to spray that into there and clean it up, I would not choke it to start it as it sounds like it got/is flooded/ing. Good Luck Tim

Why my engine doesn’t shut off?
ANSWER : You may have high carbon buildup in your piston/cylinder. The engine may fire via a DIESEL ignition. That is, as the fuel compresses in the compression stroke, it ignites just from the residual heat in the hot carbon in the combustion chamber (like an old 1970s car). Try a higher octane fuel (up to 92 or 93). Higher octane resists combustion until the soarkplug fires.

Why is gas in the oil – Cub Cadet SLT1054 54 in. 26 HP Kohler V-Twin Hydrostatic Front-Engine Riding Mower
ANSWER : First how much oil..a little is caused by worn rings etc…but if you are talking a lot..then your carb float is sticking allowing the gas from the tank to continue to flow when the engine is not running..this is due to the electrical positive shut off switch at the bottom of the carb bowl..trying to stop gas from flowing out on tne ground when the float sticks..unfortunately by design when this happens the gas will find its way through the intake, into tne cylinder and into the crankcase..sometimes filling it and the cylinders..you can replace the valve…but WILL happen again due to the design of the valve..my fix that works 100% ..IF YOUR MOWER HAS ONE make sure you shut off the gas valve EVERY TIME YOU SHUT THE ENGINE OFF as it does not take long to get into the engine.NOTE to eliminate any gas left in the carb getting into the engine..I run the engine about a min AFTER SHUTTING OFF TNE GAS SHUT OFF VALVE.. If you do not have one put one in some where between the tank and the carb where you can easly get at it..just remember every time…fixed mine and a couple other without one more gas in the oil..OH AND MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE OIL,FILTER AND CLEAN THE PLUGS AND CYLINDERS..Good luck.

Mower won’t start
ANSWER : This may sound stupid but don’t mean it to…
Have you tried with the choke all the way open? Do you have an automatic cruise? Is the right (correct) pedal being pushed in? These will affect if it starts or not. Also if your drive belt or one of the other belts not being tight enough will affect if it starts or just turns over. Not too many things can stope it from starting with new/good battery AND if its getting gas. Try cleaning your gas line and obviously making sure there is no obstruction around or near your blade, if it does start with blade engaged that is :))
If it doesn’t start with blade engaged, well make sure it’s in neutral. Mine won’t start in reverse but will in forward or neutral.

Hope it helps.

Anthony

My husqvarna zero turn mower has an auto safety shut off. I have isolated 3 (Brake, Left control level, and Right contol lever)trying to see which one was faulty, but I’m not sure where to go next. When I took the brake off, the mower stalled so I held the safety button down and when the brake was off the engine stayed running. But when I pulled the Left or Right Control level to move, it shut off, so I held those down to see if I could see which one was faulty. The engine stayed running, so I couldn’t figure out which one was bad. Every thing stayed running until I engaged the mower deck, and then it shut down again. I gave up at that point and figured I needed an experts help! Thanks, Jon Sable
ANSWER : There should be a switch under the seat. The system is designed to stop all functions if no one is setting in the seat. I believe the seat switch has failed.
Check it out and let me know.
