How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The two most common reasons a chainsaw won`t idle are a blocked air filter and an idle screw out of adjustment. Other possible causes include: Dirty Air Filter. Idle Screw out of Adjustment.
Oil, dirt, and debris can block them, preventing the air from flowing into the engine. If the idle port of your chainsaw gets blocked or damaged, your chainsaw won`t stay running. Check the idle port for damage or blockage. If it`s blocked, you can clean it using alcohol, kerosene, or any solvent.
To fix the problem, start by draining the gas tank.

Replace the old gas with a fresh mix of gas, being sure to add a stabilizer to keep the ethanol from gelling. Often, just getting fresh gas and stabilizer through the chainsaw`s fuel system may correct the saw and it should stay running.

The fuel line may be clogged from stale fuel deposits, more reasons to cause your chainsaw to cut out when applying throttle. If a fuel line is cracked, it will leak gasoline and draw air from outside into the fuel line. If the line is leaking fuel, it needs to be replaced.
Most chainsaws idle at around 2,800 to 3,200 revolutions per minute, or RPMs. At this speed, the crankshaft continues to spin, but the clutch doesn`t. When the trigger is pressed and the engine speeds up, the force pushes outward on the clutch.
An engine stalls when it`s getting too much or not enough fuel from the carburetor. Stihl chainsaw carburetors usually have three adjustment screws: one each for idle, low speed and high speed. If the saw stalls while it`s idling, adjusting the idle screw, which usually is marked LA, should help.
Locate the idle mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle lightly touches the seat. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1-1/2 turns. If your carburettor has a main jet adjustment screw at the base of the float bowl, turn the screw clockwise until you feel it just touch the seat inside the emulsion tube.
Spark arrestors are screens that limit the size of particles sometimes found in the exhaust gases of outdoor power equipment.
Fuel: Make sure it is fresh and correctly mixed (see `Starting Issues`). Air filter: Make sure it is clean and unclogged. Fuel cap: Make sure it`s hand-tight. Please ensure when you are attempting to use the chainsaw that the chain brake is disengaged.
The carburetor on a chain saw is pretty simple, as carbs go, but it`s not entirely uncomplicated. The job of the carb is to accurately meter extremely tiny quantities of fuel and mix it with the air entering the engine so that the engine runs properly.
In a gas-powered chainsaw, the on/off switch stops the engine running by preventing the ignition coil from firing. This switch is also called kill switch.
And finally, the chainsaw giving off smoke is a surefire sign of it being overheated. I`m not talking about exhaust smoke, but smoke with “unnatural” color and intensity. And finally, if your chainsaw stops after displaying one or more of the above signs – you can be about 90% sure that it overheated.
If the carburetor is clogged, it may only work with the choke engaged, which is not a good way to be running your engine. Cleaning the carburetor and replacing some of the internal parts with a new carb kit is a great way to get your carburetor running properly again.
If the carburetor is new or has been rebuilt, you should set it to “factory” adjustment. You can do so by adjusting the idle mixture screws to 1.5-2 turns out, and the idle speed screw to 1-1.5 turns in. Warm the Engine Up. The engine`s running temperature directly correlates with proper air and fuel mixtures.
An almost totally blocked spark arrestor screen on a two-stroke, air-cooled engine can cause the engine to overheat. The result is that the piston expands into the exhaust port and the engine seizes. The piston scored because the engine was unable to dissipate heat fast enough.
A spark arrestor is a mesh screen designed to prevent anything that expels flame or sparks (i.e., an internal combustion engine) from starting fires.
STIHL currently recommends that you do not store or use fuel older than 60 days, and preferably no longer than 30 days, even with a stabilizer. Read more about storing your outdoor power equipment.
Generally, two-stroke chainsaw engines are built to conveniently run at full throttle without an engine breakdown. Therefore, running at any throttle speed below the full throttle is not advised. Cutting a thick wood or timber while running at a low speed or throttle can cause the blades of the chainsaw to become dull.
2 stroke won`t idle

Whether you have a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke, if the idle adjustment is set too low, the engine won`t stay running. Turn the idle screw in and see if your dirt bike stays running. You may have to turn the idle down slightly as the engine temperature warms up.

Idle speed is controlled by using an electronically controlled throttle bypass valve, as seen in Fig. 6.6, which allows air to flow around the throttle plate and produces the same effect as if the throttle had been slightly opened such that sufficient M . a flows to maintain engine operation.
In modern vehicles, engine idle speed is most often controlled by the idle air control (IAC) motor. This can be impacted by bad fuses in many different electronic systems in your car. Next, your high idling could be caused by a computer malfunction.
For Idling (when you stop at signal without turning off engine) – 12 : 1 (rich mixture). For cruising (when you run the engine at constant medium/economy speed) – 16:1(lean mixture).
2 stroke dirt bike idle RPM

A 2 stroke dirt bike should be able to idle if it`s properly jetted. The idle speed will likely be around 1200-1500 RPM, but you just have to set the screw to where it keeps your bike running.

Makita DCS6401 wont idle. When the gas is released the chainsaw shuts off.
ANSWER : Try turning the idle speed screw CW (not the jet screw marked L) one full turn to increase speed. Normally, this is set so that the chain stops moving, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

Why will my saw not start, good spark new plug fresh gas
ANSWER : Sounds to me like a plugged up fuel line or old fuel in the fuel line. You may be able to clear it by spraying some starting fluid into the carb to pull the old fuel through. You only want to do this 2 times because this has no oil in it. Another suggestion it to remove the spark plug and put some of your fresh fuel mix directly into the chamber. About an eyedropper full should work.

Chainsaw starts and idles no trouble but when i try to rev up for cutting the engine dies as if it is not getting fuel
ANSWER : Low side adjustment issue. Turn it out a quarter turn and try it again.

Makita dcs6401 chainsaw stopped in use want restart
ANSWER : Remove the muffler and see if it starts if so open the muffler and clean the screen inside

I have a Makita chainsaw and have forgotten what kind of oil it takes
ANSWER : Use regular bar and chain oil for the oil tank. Use modern synthetic saw oil for the fuel mix. Both are available from home centers, hardware stores, and saw dealers. Be sure to premix the fuel and oil in it’s own can and agitate thoroughly before refueling the saw. Hope this helps!

How do you adjust carb? – Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"
ANSWER : If the heads of the jet screws are ‘D’ shaped, you will need a special screwdriver to tun them and only authorized service dealers have these tools. So unless you are skillful enough to make your own, you have to take the saw to a servicing dealing for adjustment. Make sure the fuel filter, air cleaner and muffler are not plugged. If the screws have slot heads, then turn both screws CW to stops (lightly), then back out CCW 1-1/2 turns each. This is a basic setting which should allow the engine to start and run. Allow the engine to warm up, then pull the throttle full on and adjust H CW until the engine begins to speeds up, but still 4-stroking. Correct setting is when the engine 4-strokes, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L CW for fairly smooth idle, yet allows the engine to ‘follow the throttle’. Adjust idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!
