Hi there

brian nave sounds like a seat switch problem , its making ground , kills engine

you mention runs if in park mode , are you sitting in seat when it does this ?

if so i suspect the seat switch may be faulty – try a jump wire across the connector at the seat switch – if it continues to run while not in park mode and blades engaged ,seat switch was your problem

if still stop with bypass wire connected – remove the wires from seat switch bypass you just fitted and retest

if unit runs as it should replace the seat switch as soon as can but leave the wires disconnected to get the job done

if this helps let me know

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If the blades are engaged and you shift to reverse the mower is designed to either shut off the blades or the engine. Some units have ROS, this is an additional position on the key switch that can be activated if the operator feels the need to mow in reverse.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die

By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.

Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
The most common cause of a mower that runs for thirty minutes and then dies is a faulty armature. A faulty gas cap is the second most likely cause.
A dirty filter chokes off air to the engine making it hard to start so check to see if yours needs to be replaced. If you need a new filter be sure to use the original manufacturers part or the correct Toro replacement. These can often be purchased at your local Toro dealer or a home improvement store.
A change to the mower safety standard, set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), is in effect that prohibits a riding mower, manufactured after September 1, 2004, from mowing continually while the operator is shifting into reverse.
Safety concerns with mowing backwards

The dominant safety concern that results when you mow backwards is that visibility is greatly compromised. When mowing backwards, you have to alter your line of vision, and it is easy to step into a pothole, or worse, collide into a young child.

I prime my tecumseh engine three times as stated. The lawn mower still will not start. How do I investigate to figure out what is wrong? I have taken it to a repair man twice. After I get it back it will start the first couple of times that I try it. Then it goes back to its history of not starting when I prime it 3 times. Sometimes I can prime it 7-9 times and it might start. Sometimes if I prime it 30-40 times it might start the next day.
ANSWER : This sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Maybe remove the carb and tear it down and then soak it overnight in a cleaner after removing all the moving parts…not real hard normally…then let dry and reassemble…If this doesn’t improve the fuel delivery problem, maybe get another carb for it….Make sure the air filter is not plugged up, blocking air flow to the carb itself..just something to make sure of at first.

I have a John Deere L118 Limited Edition (w/ 20 HP B&S engine), which I purchased about 8 years ago. It ran well with few problems up to late this summer. I believe the problem started when I accidentally filled the tank with some stale gasoline – the tractor turned over, but would not start. I drained the fuel tank and filled it with fresh gas, but it still would not start. When I use starter fluid, the tractor starts for 4-5 seconds, and then cuts off. I installed a new fuel filter. The connections in the fuel line seem tight, so while the problem might be the vacuum fuel pump itself, I do not think it is due to a leak in the line. I disconnected the fuel line at the carburetor — fuel flows through the line at start up. But when I put the fuel line directly into the air intake (with some starting fluid), the engine still cuts off in about 4 seconds. I am not sure if the pump simply is not drawing enough fuel into the carburetor. I understand that, if it is a problem with a safety cut-off, the engine would not start at all (even for 4 seconds). My thought was that the problem may be a gummed up carburetor, but that would not explain why the tractor does not start when I feed fuel directly into the carburetor. Any thoughts about other things I can try before bringing the tractor to a mechanic?
ANSWER : Just take the carb bowl off its easy one bolt on the bottom of it get the old gas out flush all old gas out of tank and line then it will run trust me i know
