How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Too Much Fuel

Most commonly a result of improper starting, “flooding” results from various causes, including over-priming, closed choke, stuck valve, gummed carburetor, or immediately trying to restart an automatic choke engine. The easiest way to tell if your engine is flooded with gas is to remove the spark plug.

Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
When fuel gets into the combustion chamber of a lawn mower engine, it tends to run rich. Over-priming, closed chokes, stuck valves, gumsmed carburetors, or attempting to restart an automatic choke engine as soon as it starts are commonly the causes of this problem.
Clogged or Dirty Air Filters

Dirty air filters are one of the most common reasons lawn mowers sputter. Dirt can be present in the apertures that lead from the carburetor and the fuel filter and interrupt the flow of fuel supply to the combustion chamber. You want to be sure to clean or replace dirty air filters.

The mass airflow sensor (MAF) measures the air entering the engine. Your car`s Electronic Control Unit, or ECU, uses the info to optimize the engine`s air-fuel mix. A dirty or faulty MAF causes a mix that`s either too rich or too lean, and that causes a misfire.
Regardless of whether or not the engine is running too rich or too lean, bring it down to a very lean mixture by turning both screws a quarter-turn at a time, counter-clockwise, then slowly bringing them back up to an equal and smooth mixture. Listen to the engine to know when you`ve found the right balance.
If the engine is running to lean, the spark plug can look greyish white. If the engine is running to rich the spark plug will look black, sometimes a glossy black if it`s really rich.

Honda g100 stationary engine starts and runs well on full choke but will not run without choke.
ANSWER : Same problem here. I solved it by removing carburetor, removing float and valve seat and soaking in carb cleaner overnite. Blew out all the orifices with air and reasembled. Runs as good as ever!Always turn gas off and run until empty, gas evaporates and leaves residue in bowl and valve.
