Hi,That is a good sign that your carb is set too rich. When an engine is cold, it needs more fuel. When it warms up, you choke it back to lean the fuel mixture.Adjust the L screw a little at a time until your engine runs well after warmup.Hope this helps. If it does, I’d appreciate a 4 thumbs up. Other things that could cause this issue are bad fuel, weak/colapsed/kinked fuel line, faulty spark plug, faulty ignition/coil, oil over full, clogged air filter, plugged/dirty carburetor, worn engine parts internal rings/valves/etc.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
The most common cause of a mower that runs for thirty minutes and then dies is a faulty armature. A faulty gas cap is the second most likely cause.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
As the fuel level drops, a vacuum begins to form in the fuel tank because air can get in to fill the space the consumed fuel occupied. After about 10 or 15 minutes, the vacuum will become strong enough that fuel will stop flowing to the carburetor and the lawnmower will die.
Problems arise in cold weather, because cold air is oxygen-rich, as you can imagine throws the ratio way off. Without the choke, the engine gets too much air for the amount of gas the engine receives. We call this a lean condition. A mower just won`t start or starts and stalls right away when the AFR is too lean.
If a mower is hard to start, it may be the result of a dirty carburetor and/or a clogged air filter. Use a screwdriver to remove the carburetor and clean any dirt out of it with a rag. Clean the air filter or replace it if it`s disposable.
Check the air filters. If they`re clogged, the engine might not be getting enough air. Either clean or replace them. Check the thermostat and make sure it is set correctly.
Use Carburetor Cleaner Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.
A dirty or fouled spark plug can cause your lawn mower to not start. It can also work itself loose, causing issues. If the spark plug appears to be seated correctly but the engine doesn`t start, a new one may be in order. For a few dollars, this easy fix can get your small engine working again.
The more worn or dirty spark plugs are, the greater the pull on the rewind and more effort is required to produce an adequate spark. If you haven`t turned on your engine recently, your mower won`t start and/or you have to tug repeatedly on the rewind to start the engine, a damaged spark plug may be the culprit.
An easy solution is to remove the mower casing and clean it of dirt and debris. Low Oil Levels can also cause overheating. With not enough oil circulating, internal friction occurs preventing heat from not being reduced. Be sure to check your oil level each time before you start your machine, and add oil if needed.
A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.

Have you tried with the choke all the way open? Do you have an automatic cruise? Is the right (correct) pedal being pushed in? These will affect if it starts or not. Also if your drive belt or one of the other belts not being tight enough will affect if it starts or just turns over. Not too many things can stope it from starting with new/good battery AND if its getting gas. Try cleaning your gas line and obviously making sure there is no obstruction around or near your blade, if it does start with blade engaged that is :))
If it doesn’t start with blade engaged, well make sure it’s in neutral. Mine won’t start in reverse but will in forward or neutral.

ANSWER : Something everyone over looks is oil. Did you check the oil? You seemed to mention everything else but. If you have a low oil switch with low oil it will not start

ANSWER : I am going to respond 2 times to this post. The first reply will be generic things to check.
First off check the oil level and make sure it is serviced to full.
If your having a lack of fuel (runing lean) you will need to check fuel flow at the carb fuel mainfold. It should fill a spray paint can lid in less than 10 seconds but teting flow rated of the main fuel line. If you have poor flow here… you need to check the fuel filter and the fuel tank outlet port for obstructions.
Good Fuel flow still shutting off…. remove the carb float bow and clean the debris from the bow’ and the treaded area where the fuel solenoid mounts Additionally you will have to again remove the main fuel line and spray carb cleaner in the float needle area to flush out any debris through the fuel hose connection.
For the second response I need to know which engine is installed on your mower by MODEL number if you can locate it. (there are 3 engines) At least try to find the engine model number. If you can not locate it Brand and HP of the engine (I assume 22 hp) Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Battery the battery is dying and it will start but, after a few mins the engine starts to sputter then goes back to idle and eventually dies. could this just be the dead battery? is that the reason the engine dies?
ANSWER : Usually, if the battery is dying, it won’t start up again.
Usually, motorized vehicles only use the battery to start the engine, then the alternator contributes all the power for actual operation.
A dead alternator or battery shouldn’t ‘sputter’, they would just stop dead.
If the engine will start, run and then sputter…there is a fuel problem.
1. There may be a ‘cut-off’ in the fuel line which is in the off postion. It may look like a thin, flat wing-nut.
2. The gas may be contaminated with water residue if the gasoline has been sitting a long time. I believe you can get some water treatment to fix this without having to dump the fuel tank contents.
3. The fuel line is blocked with dirt somewhere, I would check the fuel filter and work backwards from there.
