Black and decker 400 watt hedge trimmer seems to run at half speed then slows up and stops.
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
Worn bearing: Worn bearing increases the friction between shaft and motor, this will rise in temperature and decreases the speed of the motor. Shorted running winding: When running winding is shirted then excessive current is flow and the motor will burn.
The motor either speeds up or slows down according to the load torque. It is ideal to size a motor properly so you can operate closer to maximum efficiency (rated torque and rated speed). Look at the speed-torque curve below for an AC induction motor.
By modulating or changing the timing of these pulses, the speed of the motor can be controlled. So, the longer the pulse is “ON,” the motor will rotate faster, while conversely, the shorter the time the pulse is “ON,” the slower the motor will rotate.
The speed of a DC motor can be controlled by changing the flux applied to it as the speed of the motor is inversely proportional to the flux per pole. To control the flux, a variable resistor or a rheostat is added in series with the field winding.
If the capacitor is bad, the blower motor may run slowly or inconsistently, or overheat easily. If you notice that your blower motor works strangely or short cycles, make sure to contact professionals to inspect your capacitor.
Motor performance depends on three elements such as voltage across terminals, resistance across terminals, and magnetic force.
Motor Wiring and Number of Poles More poles result in a lower motor speed: if all other factors are equal, a 4-pole motor will rotate at half the speed of a 2-pole motor. A 60 Hz power supply changes polarity 60 times per second, and a two-pole motor will spin at 3,600 rpm when connected to this source.
The number of wire turns in an armature, the operating voltage of the motor, and the strength of the magnets all affect motor speed. If a DC motor is running on a 12 V battery, that is the maximum voltage available to the unit and the motor will only be able to perform at a speed rated for 12 V.
The motor must never operate below 30 Hz. This is the minimum speed required to provide correct bearing lubrication.
Motors slow down when load is increased and will come to a stop if overloaded. Motors have to slow down in order to increase torque to deal with increased load, up to a point of overload when they will come to a standstill.
If too many rotor bars are open, a loaded motor will draw amperes high enough to open its protection device. With no load, the amperes will be very low. Slow starting and lower-than-rated RPM are a sign of broken rotor bars.
What determines the RPM of an electric motor? AC Electric motor RPM depends on two things: Supply frequency. Number of poles of the rotor.

Lawn scarifier motor runs slow than starts to smoke
ANSWER : What sort of scarifier is it?
SMOKE AND SPARKS OUT OF ELECTRIC MOTOR ON FLYMO MOWER
ANSWER : No doubt the brushes have decided they need replaced .
Have to run on half choke, just stops if i turn it off.fuel is 25 to 1. thanks alan.
ANSWER : More than likely a small passage way in the carb is clogged. You can try some carb cleaner, but you may need to disassemble the carb and clean it out. Be advised that these passageways are sometimes as fine as a human hair, and almost impossible to clear sometimes. A new carb may be required if it is worth it to you. Sorry.
Seems to start easily run for a few minutes and then slow and stop–bulb remains full –gas is good–have tried half choke in case too lean–did not solve–also seems possibly related to the angle I hold it at–seems to cut out quicker if blower tube angled more downward.
ANSWER : Your filter may be hanging up in the tank. you also my be losing compression
Electric motor runs but well below full power, and over heats quickly. Can I fix this?
ANSWER : It could just need the bearings cleaned and lubed, but it might need them replaced or their could be partial shorts in the motor windings, which would likely make it junk. Perhaps try the bearings, but either bring it in or replace it beyond that.
Motor runs, but chain does not move – Remington Electric Chain Saw
ANSWER : Check to see if the chain is on the sprocket to do this you will probably have to remove the side cover on the saw if chain is on sprocket and still will not move then you may have a sheared key in the key way if this saw has one, if it does you should be able to see the key way on the end of the shaft coming out of the motor. there should be a nut that holds the sprocket in place if that nut is loose and the shaft is splined instead of having a key way the the sprocket could slip while the motor is turning.
While running what setting does the choke lever need to be placed in
ANSWER : Depending on how your unit runs, it may need to be on half choke until the motor warms up. After the motor gets hot it should run with the choke fully off.
MY PUMP WILL ONLY RUN ON LOW SPEED ( NEUTRAL AND BLACK) . PUMP IS MARKED 230 v , ? DOES THIS RUN ON NEUTRAL TO 120 FOR LOW SPEED AND NEUTRAL TO 120 FOR HIGH SPEED AND USE SEPERATE WINDINGS OR IS HIGH SPEED CONNECTED ACROSS BLACK AND RED. (230v)
ANSWER : If this is 220v then your netural is not a netural but a common. Meaning it is common 110v to both the high and low speeds of pump. The high and low speed are the same leg of the 220v or the other 110v leg they just separate at the clock or high/ low switch. Then yes they run through separate windings for high and low.
If your not getting high speed it could be the high speed winding but be sure to check your switch and high speed lead first before doing anything else.
