How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Why does the engine speed increase and decrease slightly every few seconds when it is at idle? It is normal for a snow thrower engine to run in this manner. The engines on snow throwers are set to run with a slightly rich fuel mixture.
The traction control cable might be broken or misadjusted. Check the traction control cable to determine if it moves freely. If the control cable does not move freely, try squirting a small amount of oil into the end of the cable to lubricate it. If lubricating the traction control cable is not effective, replace it.
Two-stage snow blowers have a self-propelled transmission with forward and reverse speeds that propel the unit in order to assist the user.

Husqvarna slow in reverse
ANSWER : Check the linkage and make sure that it has full travel

Have a 19.5 HP Craftsman lawn tractor ,automatic-it will run forward but slower than usual and in reverse very, very slow. does it have a place to check the transmission fluid? It has recently had a new transmission installed in it by a registered tech.
ANSWER : Personally my best advice is to take it back to the tech. Why? Because they should stand behind it if they just installed it and two…it may void the warranty if you touch it

I have a Husqvarna YTH 2242 TDF Ride-on-mower/Yard Tractor.Have you ever come across a problem with driving after re-engaging the transmission?

I disengaged the transmission to push the tractor in my garage a few days ago.

Today I re-engaged the transmission. At first it wouldn’t reverse, then I repeated the operation and all was well…I thought.

I set off towards my lawn…up a small slope, and towards the top of the slope eased off on the forward drive pedal, while deciding which way to go, and the tractor slowed, and stopped. Then, to start moving forward again I pressed the forward drive pedal. But, the tractor had no forward drive…nor did it have any Brake pedal. There was just nothing ……and the tractor rolled back down the slope, quite quickly, gathering speed, backwards. Luckily it is not much of a slope and it came to rest on the flat again. When I tried the Forward drive to set off again, it worked…and the brake worked too. I thought I must simply have panicked somehow. So I set off again…and at the top of the slope, again paused…eased off on the forward drive……..and again the same thing happened. No forward drive, no brakes!
Has anyone encountered this problem before?
and …does the brake pedal operate on the transmission somehow, rather than on the road wheels?
Many thanks

ANSWER : Hello! There are two known faults with the Husqvarna YTH…# 1 is the drive belt slipping…The belts have a manufacturing defect, in that they are out of specification in length…After some usage slipping occurs…#2 is a brake recall which is described below…It refers to the 19.5 HP 42″ cut but the 46″ cut utilizes the same braking mechanism…Guru…saailerBrake Recall.

Hi i have a husqvarna ride on lawnmower that moves in reverse ok but very slow in forward and the leaver on pushes forward a small amount not fully forward
ANSWER : Sounds like your bely or one of the pulleys are wore out ck the pulleys and ck to see if the belt has sliped off the pulley

MY PUMP WILL ONLY RUN ON LOW SPEED ( NEUTRAL AND BLACK) . PUMP IS MARKED 230 v , ? DOES THIS RUN ON NEUTRAL TO 120 FOR LOW SPEED AND NEUTRAL TO 120 FOR HIGH SPEED AND USE SEPERATE WINDINGS OR IS HIGH SPEED CONNECTED ACROSS BLACK AND RED. (230v)
ANSWER : If this is 220v then your netural is not a netural but a common. Meaning it is common 110v to both the high and low speeds of pump. The high and low speed are the same leg of the 220v or the other 110v leg they just separate at the clock or high/ low switch. Then yes they run through separate windings for high and low.
If your not getting high speed it could be the high speed winding but be sure to check your switch and high speed lead first before doing anything else.

Lawnmower will not go forward or in reverse. Brake is not engaged.
ANSWER : Is the lawnmower in transport mode. I know alot are underneath the back and it is a a small handle that when engaged disallows the mower to be put into gear. Let me know if this isnt the problem.

Tractor will not go in forward gear, only reverse.
ANSWER : Try rocking the mower forward and backward while you try to shift it.

Will start, but dies soon after. There is no choke on this mower. Engine speeds up and slows down before dying.
ANSWER : The float in the bowl and needle needs to be changed or cleaned real good. The float is opening up the needle enough to get it running but not floating in the fuel bowl to keep the right amount going to carb.
