I was given a chainsaw and the kill switch wire was disconnected. Does it need to be in order to run?
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
The on/off switch must be connected and switched to ON to run. The kill switch if it is the type of switch that you must press and hold then not it only grounds the coil to stop the spark plug from getting power.

So my answer is no.

A kill-switch is a very simple device that relies on a spring-loaded button to keep the switch open (ie off) when you want the engine to run. There is a clip which fits under the button of the kill-switch and the clip is attached to a tether which is also attached at the other end to the person controlling the boat.
In a kill switch setup, the switch is normally not creating a circuit, which allows the engine to start and run. When you want to shut the engine off, the switch is depressed and held. This creates a circuit to ground which shuts off the engine. The ignition switch is turned on or off to control the ignition circuit.
Wire the Kill Switch to the Kart Engine

The other wire of your kill switch will need to be connected to a ground wire fixed on your go-kart. The most appropriate place to connect your ground wire is to tie it to a bolt on your go-kart engine block.

Kill switches can be mounted at the battery, hidden somewhere between the battery and starter to prevent theft, or popularly on combines, placed at ground level to eliminate the need to crawl up into the engine compartment to de-energize/re-energize the machine`s electrical system.
This kill switch works by unhooking the negative car lead and then connecting the kill switch to the negative battery terminal directly. Turning a knob one way completes the circuit, while turning it the other way inhibits the necessary electricity from flowing from the car`s battery to the engine.
It is not illegal to remove a kill switch from a leased car but it is a violation of your leasing agreement. It may be considered criminal destruction of property, but is not a crime in its own right. A kill switch is a device that stops your car from working, often by disconnecting the connection to the battery.
In a gas-powered chainsaw, the on/off switch stops the engine running by preventing the ignition coil from firing. This switch is also called kill switch. It must be clearly marked with the stop position.
Most older switches are not grounded; many switches do not even have a ground screw. However, recent codes call for switches to be grounded. Replace an older switch with a newer one that has a ground screw and connect it to a ground wire.
Unlike a normal shut-down switch or shut-down procedure, which shuts down all systems in order and turns off the machine without damage, a kill switch is designed and configured to abort the operation as quickly as possible (even if it damages the equipment) and to be operated simply and quickly (so that even a …
Standard Battery Disconnect Switches

A standard or remote battery shut off switch is designed to work by cutting off the connection between your battery and the 12-volt fuses that power the vehicle.

A kill switch ensures that your device won`t revert to its default Internet connection if the VPN connection suddenly drops. Some providers feature whitelists where you can enable apps to bypass the kill switch rules and still relay Internet traffic, even without a VPN connection.

Kill switch doesn't work, how do i fix it? – Husqvarna 350 18 Inch Gas Chainsaw 52CC Fully Assembled Brand New 18"
ANSWER : The switch connects directly to the coil body of the ignition module. You may have to remove the left side cover to expose the ignition module. The switch, when off, connects this wire to engine ground. There may be debris in the contacts of the switch that prevent contact. You will have to remove the air cleaner assembly and maybe the carburetor itself to access the switch. Good luck!

I have a 2.5 turbo craftsman chainsaw that I just rebuilt the carb. this chain saw was given to me and was not working when I was given this gift I knew it had worked before knowing the people that gave me the chainsaw. I got the engine running with the rebuil then it would not turn off. I had pull the plug wire. though maybe it was the switch, but the parts store tested and said the switch was fine. I checked to see if it had come undone from the ciol, but it had not. I disconnected the switch and it will still start then while it was running I tried to connectthe two wires going to the switch thinking it would turn off, but it did not. what do you suggest?
ANSWER : Hi, if you short the kill switch terminal on the coil and you still have spark then the earthing circuit inside the coil is fried. If this is the case the only way to fix your problem is replace the coil. Regards Phil.

Cant figure out how to hook the kill switch back up
ANSWER : There should be a double wire from the ignition unit, both with female terminals on, the insulated terminal is the earth return and pushes onto the spring steel ******** the side of the air filter housing, the other terminal slides into the side of the red plastic switch, if you look at the side of the switch it is moulded in the side for the terminal to slide into it.

Chain saw starts and stays running in half choke but as soon as you put it in run it diesl
ANSWER : The machine is running too lean, start by checking the easy stuff first, pull the fuel hose out from inside the fuel tank, clean/ replace the filter on the end of the hose ( as a temperary test fill the tank with fuel and try the saw with no fuel filter on the hose, if it runs better then the filter is blocked ), follow the fuel hose up to the carb, check for any splits or cracks, pay special attention to the area where it leaves the fuel tank, and where it fits to the carb, if it is still no better, make an adjustment to the carb mixture screws, they are marked H and L there will also be a screw marked T or I this is just the tick over screw. Unscrew both H and L screws ( anti clockwise ) 1/2 turn, this will richen the mixture, if not much better unscrew the L screw a further 1/2 turn. If the saw has not improved there is a blockage in the carb, let me know what make and model of machine we are working with so we can talk about cleaning the carb.
