Uses for a Radial-Arm Saw

While it is mainly a crosscut saw, this tool can be used to rip, cut bevels or miters, dadoes and rabbets, form moldings, and in some cases, even serve as a guide for a router.

DeWalt Radial Arm Saws were created in the 1920s and were targeted at the home builder. Over the next few decades, the radial arm saw became a popular saw for the military.
Like many table saws, most radial-arm saws use ten-inch blades. Typically, they cut stock up to three inches thick and will crosscut pieces more than a foot wide.
The biggest risk with radial arm saws is as you are cutting and it`s working into the wood, it can get a bit too much traction, start to climb cut and the saw can come flying back.
Disadvantages of Using a Radial Arm Saw

The high cost makes them an unattractive choice for both commercial and consumer woodworking applications. Radial arm saws also require extra work to maintain. If the blade becomes dull, it may drive itself into the wooden workpiece during operation.

Never clear small pieces while blade is moving. Never adjust saw or setup while saw is running. Never cross arms. Radial arm saws cut in a fashion that pulls the blade into the piece pushing the stock to the fence.
Radial saws are easier to maintain because the overhead blade can be aligned very quickly. If space is limited, a radial saw can be positioned against the wall, whereas a table saw must be located away from the wall to allow space for larger workpieces to be moved across the blade.
From cross-cutting to making furniture to the wood frame; the heavy-duty tool can do it all. Unlike table saws, a radial arm saw has exposed blades that move across the surface as the blade cuts through the wood. The versatility, functionality, and usefulness of such power tools are unmatchable.
Ripping on a radial arm saw is just plain dangerous, and I would recommend you never do that. Hook angle has nothing to do with the danger; the climbing force vector of the saw`s design has everything to do with it.
In the home shop the radial arm saw is an alternative to the table saw. Both machines can rip, crosscut, do simple and compound miters, dado, mold or shape, make tenons, make open mortises, taper cut, and rabbet.
A radial drill consists of a spindle arrangement connected to a chuck and a drill bit. When the drill bit is placed in the chuck, it spins in conjunction with the motor to produce a hole in the workpiece. The radial arm is adjustable to the height of the workpiece and type of operation.
A radial arm saw is a cutting machine consisting of a circular saw mounted on a sliding horizontal arm. Invented by Raymond DeWalt in 1922, the radial arm saw was the primary tool used for cutting long pieces of stock to length until the introduction of the power miter saw in the 1970s.

I was using the saw as a chain saw last weekend to cut up an old tree stump when the chain came off. I don’t know how to access it to put it back on and don’t have a user manual. The saw belonged to my late father and I don’t know if he even kept the manual.
ANSWER : You will have to remove the cover on the side the chain bar goes into. There should be one or two nuts holding the cover on the side. The is also a chain tension adjuster you may have to loosen to put it back on. Make note of the direction of the teeth on the chain. It is an directional chain. The tension adjuster is usually a flat head screw on the front side right beside the chain bar.Unless it is a really old saw, manuals are available from most manufacturers for free download. See if you can locate a brand name and model number.
