How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Generally speaking, the blade should be tight enough so that it doesn`t move around on its own, but you should be able to move with your hand by applying some pressure. The manufacturer should provide a proper tightening level expressed in foot-pounds, commonly found in the mower`s manual.
Blade bolts should always be torqued to the proper range. For the 7/16 GR 8 bolts (5/8″ wrench) used on some mowers, torque to 45-55 ft lbs. Please use the factory bolt because there must be a recessed area in the washer. For the 3/8 x 24 GR 8 bolts (9/16″ wrench) used on other tractors, torque to 30-40 ft lbs.
It is an important aspect of regular mower maintenance because the greater the torque, the more efficient the lawn mower`s performance.
Proper blade installation is essential for mowing. Whether you are sharpening an existing blade or installing new blades, proper blade orientation is very important. If you install a blade incorrectly, your mower may not cut properly.
Standard Mower Blades

The standard blade, as we refer to it, doesn`t have any altered angles along the cutting edge. It`s straight and simple. If you are looking to grind a 30 degree edge on these blades, you only need the Model 5002.

For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck. Naturally, this makes the sweet spot about 1/4-inch of pitch, depending on the mower model.
Before using the mower • Read the separate 4 stroke or 2 stroke engine manual. For the 4 stroke engines 600ml of SAE 30 oil must be placed in engine sump before starting engine.
Quad Blade Cutting System – 4 swing-back blades deliver a cleaner cut & improved catching in thick conditions.
Mower blades should be aggressively sharp, but not as sharp as a razor`s edge. You should be able to touch the blade with your hand without getting cut. Contrary to popular belief, a lawn mower blade with a razor sharp edge will not cut grass better.

It may sound great, but did you know that most lawnmower blade nuts aren`t reverse threaded? If you check today`s market, you`ll notice that the majority of the lawnmower blades work in a right-hand thread or a clockwise direction.

I need to get the blade of the lawn mower sharpened.Any tips on how to disconnect the blade fropm the lawn mower?
ANSWER : There is a jig that you can buy that makes this job SO much eaiser. It is a universal jig that clamps onto the deck and keeps the blade from spinning so you can use a ratchet to remove the nut holding the blade on. One name brand is called a “Blade Hog”. You should be able to find one of these at one of the bog box hardware stores.

Hope this helps,
Chad

I would like to replace the mulching blades on my Sears Craftsman riding mower with regular cutting blades. I can find plenty of sources for new mulching blades, but not cutting blades. My mower is a model 917.259541 tractor and the blades currently on it are part #134149. I want to make sure I get the right size to replace them. Also, is there a source for a bagging system for this mower, that won’t cost as much as one from Sears?
ANSWER : The straight blade for the 42 inch mower is 138971.They cut better and are easier to sharpen and you will need them if you use a gass catcher. If you do not want to use sears for parts you may be able to find good deals on ebay.

Csan I use WD-40 to lubercate the blade?

My lawmower got wet in the rain and the blade is stiff. It would run for a split second to show me that it works. I filled up the gas tank. I checked the oil. Everything up until that point seems fine. When I turned it over to check the under the mower. I cleaned all of the dry hard grass off and spun the blade. That was when I noticed there is a tight spot and I think thats stopping the blade from spinning properly. thus keeping the lawnmower from running? Will WD-40 get the blade moving properly or do I need some special lubercation to get the blade spinning properly?

ANSWER : The tight spot that you are noticing is the compression stroke of the engine. The blade is hooked to the crank shaft, which also means that if you are spinning it by hand and still have the spark plug hooked up to the plug wire, you could potentially start the mower and chop your hand to bits. WD-40 will not free anything up here and the stiff spot you feel is not a problem. Be safe out there.
