Briggs & Stratton

Parents gave us their old riding lawn mower. It has the book for the engine but not the blades. The model number under the seat is worn but it looks like 501/1205/K or R 018L4. Mom wrote on the front of this that it is a Briggs and Stratton synchro- balanced 12 Horse power. It says on the mower 38″ cut. Please help! Thank you so much! Susan

The best thing to do is take the blades off and get the # off them and let me know. They may be aftermarket #’s that I could look up and tell you what blades you need. You may have to wire brush them to find the #. Dwain

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

The easiest way to find replacement lawn mower blades is with the OEM number. The OEM number is the numerical part number of the blade assigned by the manufacturer. In most cases, just typing this number with the manufacturer name into a search engine or online store will be enough to bring up some promising results.
Unfortunately, it is possible to put a lawn mower blade on wrong, resulting in damaging the mower, poor grass cutting performance, and even safety risks. To avoid such problems, it is important to understand how to properly install a lawn mower blade, and to make sure that it is securely attached to the mower.
No, not all lawn mower blades are the same. Each type of lawn mower has its own specific blade type that is designed to work best with that particular mower. For example, a riding lawn mower will have a different blade than a push lawn mower.
While most lawn mowers come with a standard blade, you may be wondering if it`s possible to put a smaller blade on a lawn mower. The answer is yes, but it`s important to understand the reasons why you might want to do this and the potential benefits it could bring.
The best way to find a replacement blade is by referencing the part number stamped on the blade, usually somewhere between the center holes. This number can be used to find an OEM replacement blade or cross reference high-quality aftermarket blades at a reduced cost.
Right-hand cut vs left-hand cut blades

Believe it or not, the cutting edge is not on the same side for all lawn mower blades. Right-hand cut lawn mower blades are overwhelmingly the most common type. Left-hand cut blades can be found on some mower`s manufactured by Kubota, Woods, Walker, and others.

It`s important that the blade`s cutting edge follows the direction of rotation. The wings of the lawn mower blade will be oriented up toward the mower deck, and any writing on the blade will likely be facing away from the deck. If the blade bolt comes with a washer, its concave side will be facing the blade.
So, are lawn mower blades universal? Lawnmower blades are not universal, they are mower specific. A mower blade must be an exact fit and torqued to the manufacturer`s specification.
Sharp blades actually improve the overall health of your lawn. For example, clean-cut grass from a sharp mower recovers from a cut quicker. This allows the grass to fight off any chance of disease.

Unless your blade is really old, the side with the cutting edge will be visibly sharper and shinier than the other side, which will have a dull and blunt edge. The side of the blade with the blunt edge should always face upwards towards the lawn mower`s deck.

Twin blades produce a superior cut, giving your lawn a smooth, even surface. Our blades are designed specifically for our mowers, using advanced engineering to lift each blade of grass and achieve a perfect cut. Twin blades produce finer clippings. That means less clumping and a better look for your lawn.
Standard blades, sometimes referred to as 2-in-1 blades, are designed to cut grass and then either discharge or bag the clippings. Standard and high-lift blades are straight and aerodynamic as possible to create a powerful lift that will expel the grass clippings from under the deck.

Husqvana LTH 2038 model, blade is bent so bought new ones, when i tried to put on the new ones the right hand side one hits the deck. What could it be (checked the blades they are the right ones)
ANSWER : It sounds like whatever bent the blade may have also bent the rotator shaft,, if this is the case – replace the right hand rotator shaft,, then re-install the new blades and all should be good to go.
(( if the shaft looks ok on a roll test,, it could be the mount and metal portion of the shaft and you could get lucky and try and use a breaker bar to flex and bend it back into the proper position ).
