How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Two-stroke (or 2-cycle) engines require a mixture of fuel and oil be added to the fuel tank. This mixture results in both engine combustion and lubrication. Operating a 2-Stroke engine on gasoline alone will result in engine failure.
Use a 32:1 gasoline to oil ratio. One gallon of gasoline combined with 4 oz of two-cycle engine oil.
Lawnmowers tend to have two types of engines, and depending on which type they have, they can use a gas and oil mix, or you`ll need to separate the oil and gas from each other. If you have a two-stroke engine, you can mix gas and oil without any problems.
Fuel for your lawn mower or outdoor power equipment must meet these requirements: Clean, fresh, unleaded. A minimum of 87 octane/87 AKI (91 RON); If operating at high altitude, see below. Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol (gasohol) or up to 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), is acceptable.
The easiest way to tell a 2-cycle engine from a 4-cycle engine is the number of fuel tank and/or oil sump fill ports. A 2-cycle engine has one fill port with a cap that has fuel pump and oil can icon. The cap will usually state the oil to fuel mix ratio.
Some lawn mowers have two-stroke engines, and these require oil in a different way than four-stroke engines. All two-stroke engines burn gasoline and oil at the same time. In the case of lawn mowers, two-stroke engine oil is mixed with the gasoline before it goes into the tank.
Oil capacity is typically 15oz or 18oz*. Check oil level during the season and add when necessary. Change engine oil every 50 hours or annually, whichever comes first.
A 4-Stroke engine is the kind of engine that is common on lawn mowers. It is heavy and has to remain in an upright position to be used, so it doesn`t work so well on lawn equipment such as weed eaters or chainsaws.
Lawnmowers and other garden machinery can run on either unleaded petrol or diesel. Most standard lawnmowers and garden machinery use petrol, while diesel is usually used only for commercial or heavy-duty professional-use machines, such as ride-on tractor lawnmowers.

How Do 4-Cycle Engines Work? Four-stroke (four-cycle) engines are newer and have a separate compartment for oil, so you don`t have to worry about mixing fuel.

I just had my mower out and it ran on the first run in 3 weeks
ANSWER : I typically do 6 things in this situation:

1. Verify that the gas tank is full and closed
2. Verify that the oil is filled to the “full line”
3. Remove and inspect air filter clean/replace if necessary
4. Remove and inspect spark plug clean/replace as neccesary
5. Apply warm air to engine block via hair dryer at the spark plug for 5 minutes and attempt to restart
6. If that doesn’t work allow the mower to “rest” for 30 minutes and repeat step 5.

I have a Murray 6.0 hp 20 inch push lawn mower. How much oil do I put in when changing oil.
ANSWER : If there is a dip stick add some oil check the level till you get to the full mark. It should take a little more than a quart. If there is no dip stick then there is an oil fill plug down low on the engine. Fill slowly until the oil reaches the threads in the engine housing (almost overflowing). Be sure to replace the plug or you will have oil everywhere when you start it.

Don’t just dump the oil in, check the level as you go!

My B&S Yard Machine shoots out white smoke it also leaks out oil and gas mixed
ANSWER : If this is a 4 cycle mower (seperate places for gas and oil) and you are using a oil and gas mix as I am reading from your post that is your problem. When you use a gas&oil mix in a 4 cycle you get smoke and if fouls your spark plug. Also be more specific where the oil and gas mixed is leaking from. I SUGGEST THAT YOU DRAIN OUT THE GAS&OIL MIX AND CLEAN THE SPARK PLUG OR REPLACE AND FILL WITH STRAIGHT GAS AND SEE HOW IT RUNS.

Good luck
