“” Push Mower

Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
You should probably clarify whether it stalls within seconds of being started or minutes. Also did this issue appear after the mower was running ok this season or is this something that happen after it was unused for a while. Although I can give you some general reasons for the problem and a few solutions that might help. If it will not stay running long enough to get warm it could be an issue with the choke. To check it remove the air cleaner and make sure the butterfly valve\flap is opening freely when you engage\disengage the choke and spray it down with some lubricant. There are only three ingredients that go into making a motor run. Fuel, air and spark. Although you have spark it is a good idea to replace the plug every season if you haven’t done so already. A weak spark could cause this problem. The same goes for the air cleaner. If the motor is starved for air it will cause it to stall out. If it’s a paper element, replace it. If it’s foam, wash it warm soapy water. The last thing to check is the fuel system. If the mower was sitting for any length of time you should probably drain the fuel and put fresh in. If after this it is still refusing to stay running, you may have a problem inside the carburetor. If you are comfortable with working on something like this then the easiest way to check it is to remove the carburetor. After this remove the bowl on the bottom side and inspect the float. You want to make sure it moves freely and that there is no build up of any dark brown sticky substance anywhere inside. This is from old gas. The best way to clean this is with automotive carb cleaner spray. If you are unsure about removing and cleaning the carburetor then at least spray inside the carburetor throat with the spray, and tap the bottom of the carburetor with handle of a screwdriver. This might help break loose the float if it is stuck.Good Luck!

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die

By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.

A dirty carburetor is the most common cause of a lawn mower that starts and then dies. Other possible causes include: Stale/Dirty Gas. Faulty Choke.
If your lawnmower starts up but then dies in the middle of mowing your lawn, you could have a bad spark plug. The spark plug works with the ignition coil to create a timed spark in the cylinder, causing combustion. The spark plug is really a very simple device.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
Your lawn mower runs for 30 minutes then dies if you are having issues such as a bad spark plug, air problems, a malfunctioning carburetor, or a faulty gas cap. You may even encounter the issue that your lawn mower runs for 5 minutes then dies.
Mower Gas Cap

If the tank is sealed, the fuel becomes air locked, and the mower stalls. This typically happens after a short period between ten and thirty minutes and also depends on factors like weather and gas tank fuel level.

Why Is My Lawnmower Turning Over But Not Starting? If you pull the cord and hear your engine turn over, but your mower is not starting, the most common reasons for this are low fuel, a broken gas valve, or a bad choke fault. A broker spark plug could also be the culprit.
If a mower is hard to start, it may be the result of a dirty carburetor and/or a clogged air filter. Use a screwdriver to remove the carburetor and clean any dirt out of it with a rag. Clean the air filter or replace it if it`s disposable.
Other things that could cause this issue are bad fuel, weak/colapsed/kinked fuel line, faulty spark plug, faulty ignition/coil, oil over full, clogged air filter, plugged/dirty carburetor, worn engine parts internal rings/valves/etc.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
ANSWER : Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.

Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.

I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!

I have a Poulan push mower that after mowing in a ditch started making a loud noise and running rough. It almost sounded as if metal was hitting metal. The mower was vibrating more than normal. I checked under the mower and nothing is hitting. After a few times of stopping the mower engine because it sound as if it is going to die down the mower will not start now. The shaft does not appear bent and the blade appears ok. The mower has oil, a good spark plug and a clean air filter. It was running fine until that moment. I did not see anything that I hit but it is possible I hit something in the ditch like a pine cone or branch. What could the problem be and how would I go about fixing it?
ANSWER : If you are sure the oil level is correct then it sounds like it’s about to die, unfortunately. A pine cone shouldn’t cause any damage, but a large branch may do so. Was it smoking before you shut it down? The vibration could be caused from a bent blade. It could also be caused from a part breaking in the motor. I wish I could have given you better news!

Good Luck,

Jim
