Lawn Mower Backfires Through Exhaust

If a lawn mower is not properly maintained and serviced, it can cause the engine to run too rich, resulting in the fuel and air mixture igniting too late and causing a backfire. Other common causes of backfiring include a dirty air filter, faulty spark plug, or a clogged carburetor.

Why do I sometimes hear a loud backfire noise when I shut off my engine? Backfire, or more accurately “after fire” when it occurs when stopping an engine, is caused by unburned fuel/air mixture being ignited by the heat of the muffler.
The demand for additional power will instead flood the combustion chambers with more fuel to compensate for the poor burning. This fuel wastage increases the fuel consumption as the un-burnt fuel air mixture is evacuated as exhaust to cause the smell from your exhaust pipe and sometimes sparks.
The primary cause of a backfire is decelerating too quickly. The simple fix for this is just to lower the engine speed a bit more gradually. If you have a throttle that you use to reduce speed, gradually let it up instead of letting it rebound quickly.
If too much fuel is added to the engine, it may not all burn up before the exhaust valves open — letting unburned gasoline into the red-hot exhaust headers, where it can combust and lead to a backfire. Too much fuel could be getting into your engine due to damaged and leaking fuel injectors or bad engine sensors.
An engine backfire occurs whenever the air-fuel mixture in your car combusts somewhere outside the engine`s cylinders. This can cause damage to your car`s exhaust or intake if left unchecked — and it also means that your car`s engine isn`t making as much power as it should, and is wasting lots of fuel.
Backfires and afterfires are worth paying attention to since they can cause engine damage, power loss, and decreased fuel efficiency.
A thermal insulation on a heat source like exhaust pipes, headers, or turbocharger downpipes is the most effective solution at containing heat. If insulating the heat source isn`t an option or not preferred, a radiant heat shield (something that deflects heat away) is the way to go.”
Danger Level: Medium. If your exhaust pipe is emitting black smoke, it`s likely because the fuel/air mixture is too rich. In order to combust properly, your engine needs a precise mixture of fuel and air. The mixture is “rich” when it has too much fuel or too little air.

I have a cub cadet 2165 I just put in a new battery and it is slow turning over any ideas?
ANSWER : If battery is good and everything is hooked up right. Most likely could be the pto clutch bearing. Not the bearing on the pulley but on the clutch inside. Had the same problem, took the spark plugs out got it free. Turned over easy with plugs out, Started right up after and then burned up my bearing. Don’t burn up bearing. If do field assy. For that is 200$ if you can get away with just that. Otherwise 350-400$ for full assy.
