How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A: The first thing I would check is your air filter. It is common this time of year for air filters to become clogged with dust particles thus preventing appropriate air flow. This can gradually make your lawn mower sluggish and difficult to start.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
Excessive Fuel Consumption: As an example, if you were previously able to mow your lawn two full times before the tank runs out of gas, and now you consistently cannot finish that second mowing, your fuel consumption rate has increased. A clogged air filter may be one of the causes of this.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
The fuel filter might be clogged. A clogged fuel filter is most commonly caused by leaving old fuel in the lawn mower. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the fuel filter and cause the engine to run roughly.
As the fuel level drops, a vacuum begins to form in the fuel tank because air can get in to fill the space the consumed fuel occupied. After about 10 or 15 minutes, the vacuum will become strong enough that fuel will stop flowing to the carburetor and the lawnmower will die.
Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

Too Much Fuel

Most commonly a result of improper starting, “flooding” results from various causes, including over-priming, closed choke, stuck valve, gummed carburetor, or immediately trying to restart an automatic choke engine. The easiest way to tell if your engine is flooded with gas is to remove the spark plug.

If you mess up and put diesel into your gas lawn mower, you can still save your lawn mower. Lawn mowers are low compression so a little bit of diesel shouldn`t hurt anything too much. However, there is a risk that it will cause the mower to smoke rather badly.

I get about half way through mowing my yard and it acts like its running out of gas, i changed everything but the kitchen sink no luck!
ANSWER : Try removing the air cleaner and run the mower rpm up high then close of the air intake hole with your hand it will stall start back up repaeat this will usually **** out any blockage in the carb. If this doesn’t work remove the float bowl and empty the contents, clean, replace. If this mower doesn’t have a float bowl (carb and float intergrated type) remove the gas take along with the carb and disassemble the carb from the gas tank and clean out the small chamber in tank and spray all parts with carb cleaner then blow out with compressed air reassemble and start.

ANSWER : Hello. Thanks for using fixya. First thing i would do is make sure it has gas in the fuel tank. If that’s ok. I would replace the spark plugs next. Could be that they are fouled out causing the no start problem.

I have a cub cadet 2165 I just put in a new battery and it is slow turning over any ideas?
ANSWER : If battery is good and everything is hooked up right. Most likely could be the pto clutch bearing. Not the bearing on the pulley but on the clutch inside. Had the same problem, took the spark plugs out got it free. Turned over easy with plugs out, Started right up after and then burned up my bearing. Don’t burn up bearing. If do field assy. For that is 200$ if you can get away with just that. Otherwise 350-400$ for full assy.
