Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Does that motor vibrate badly? The crankshaft may have gotten bent. If it vibrates VERY badly, it may be nearly impossible to keep that bolt tightened. Your best bet may be to try some (REMOVABLE) Loctite (like Loctite Blue 242) on the bolt threads. It’s expensive, but it’s well suited for situations just like this.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If the crankshaft pulley breaks apart, the drive belt will stop turning causing the power steering pump to stop working. Without the aid of the power steering pump the vehicle will become hard to turn left and right.
It is actually quite unusual for this nut to come loose. In fact, the noise happens because of the stretching of the rivets that hold the two halves of the pulley together. The answer is to remove the pulley and re-tighten the rivets.
Bolts are designed with a certain level of safety factor built in, so they can often withstand some level of over-tightening before they fail. The bolt may stretch: When a bolt is over-tightened, it can stretch beyond it.
Crankshaft Pulley Bolt (14mm)
A: The bolt head size is 5/8 ths.
These bolts are used to hold the harmonic balancer pulley on to the crankshaft timing belt gear.
Adjust the torque wrench by pulling out the dial at the bottom part of the handle and rotate to the degree of force you want to exert on the bolt. Begin tightening the bolt and stop tightening when you feel the wrench click or `slip`.
Remove crank bolt or nut by turning counter-clockwise. If no bolt is visible, remove dust caps. Some caps pry out and some thread out.
That you cannot rotate either cam or crankshaft pulleys by hand is completely normal. If you were able to rotate them bare handed, THEN you would have a problem.

Is bolt reverse threading? – Honda 2009 Pilot
ANSWER : Are you asking about the crankshaft pulley bolt?
I believe it is right-hand thread but there may be a special tool to remove it that prevents the crankshaft from turning. You may be able to rent or borrow the tool from an auto parts store.
Be aware that you may also need a torque wrench that goes up somewhere in the neighborhood of 180 ft-lbs.

The only left hand thread I can think of is a 24mm flange nut on the end of the counter-shaft.

I have a craftsman mower with the Briggs and Stratton 19.5 horsepower turbo cooled motor in it. What weight of motor oil is required? This does not have a oil filter
ANSWER : Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

Oil for your engine is a standard 30 weight detergent oil. If your in a hot environment the manufacturer recommends 20 – 50 W and if your in a cold environment the recommended oil is 5W-30 or 5W-40. For most US applications a 30 W detergent oil is fine. If you can locate your engine number I can provide you with an engine manual stating the above.

This manual is for the 19.5 Hp Vanguard engine:

Chain saw won’t start – pull starter pulley hard to pull?
ANSWER : If it worked fine the last time you used it, then pull the spark plug and try pulling the rope. See if it’s easier or if gas shoots out of the plug hole. I’ve seen this happen when the diaphram in the carb goes bad from sitting over winter. It loads up the cylider with fuel and makes it very difficult to pull the rope. If there is no fuel in the cyliner and it’s still hard to pull, make sure there is nothing binding the clutch/sprocket. I’ve had chucks of wook lodged in there that caused it to bind the crank output, which resulted in a hard pull on the rope as well.

2005 Craftsman DYT 4000 18.5hp Briggs: As I was cutting I heard a whirling sound as if a belt was slipping on a pulley. The sound went away after a second or two, and then the deck began to vibrate. By that time I had shut the mower down. This occurred without hitting anything in the lawn. After examination, a pulley appeared to have loosened on top the mandrel. When I removed the top bolt I realized the bolt was not loose at all. The pulley itself was loose due to the grooves from the mandrel scoring a circle in the pulley where it is normally notched. Of course, the mandrel also had the notches round off in the corresponding area. When I dropped the deck and removed the belt, the blade and mandrel turned easily. I thought it would have been locked in place. After looking over the entire deck I noticed that the idler pulley spring was missing. Could this one little $2.00 spring have caused all of this damage? I can’t find any other reason for it.

Also, I have purchased two new heavy duty mandrel assemblies and a replacement pulley and spring. Are there torque specs for the mandrel housing bolts, and the mandrel top bolts? Should I use anti-seize or lock-tite in these areas? Thanks…

ANSWER : DCJohnson, let me start by saying that the only thing you may want to put on the bolt would be a anti-weather, some of these come as anti seize, but it must be patroleum based. You definatly dont want lock tite in these areas due to the climate changes. This could prevent you from EVER getting that bolt out with a wrench again.

As for the tourque specs, the ft-lb specs really aren’t that important, especially if you dont have a tourque wrench, which will guess you have. SO to get that out of the way, i would say roughy 35 ft-lbs of tourge would be fine. This is how i always judge my tourque by hand

1. Hand tighten the bolt until you feel your bicep working to turn it.
2. Then pull the wrench to you with the force equivillent to pulling yourself out of a chair or equivilant position. (typically 1/2 up to 1 full turn after reaching a tightened state.) you will know when its tight because you will here creeking sounds form the bolt. DOnt go more the 1 full turn if you do hear the sounds

Belt for self popelled mower keeps breaking? Cannot keep a new belt on pulley
ANSWER : Check that the pulley isn’t seizing up and causing the belt to snap, also be sure you loosen up the self propelled mechanismn by spraying down with WD 40, too much belt tension can cause this, but it rather seems like the belt pulley seizes and the engines drive pulley keeps turning causing the belt to overheat and break or stretch and come flying off.
