I inherited a Sears tractor from the neighbor. The 17Hp B&S engine starts and runs, but we get smoke from the front pulley under the engine when the clutch pedal is disengaged, and no expected movement of the tractor. Is there a better troubleshooting manual than the stock Owner’s Manual? If not, what are the obvious problem areas to check? The mower free-wheels just fine when you push it from your neighbor’s house to yours…

The fuel tank can develop a vacuum. This could cause fuel to stop running to the engine – causing it to stall. If this is the case, give it an hour or two, and the tank pressure will reset and equalize. Then the tractor will run again.

ANSWER : Need to fix that. it may be a fire hazard.

ANSWER : Check top of sector gear mounting plate for waer this is the gear that hooks to you steering gear . the plate that it mounts to will ware down causing it to be loos and slip . the only way i know to fix it is to pull the cross member out and take it to a welding shop and have it built back up.if the bolt is as tight as itcan go .

ANSWER : You have to disengage the transmission if automatic, There is a lever in the back pull out and up. then try to push, also make sure that the brake is off.

ANSWER : If i’m not mistaken there should be a bolt in the center of the clutch that screws to the crankshaft remove top cover and have someone hold a wrench or socket on the top nut while another unscrews the bolt running through the clutch (righty tighty lefty loosey) may need to unbolt the steel rod that keeps the clutch housing from spinning. also dont forget to unplug the wires hope this helps
