We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
Clogged or Dirty Air Filters
Dirty air filters are one of the most common reasons lawn mowers sputter. Dirt can be present in the apertures that lead from the carburetor and the fuel filter and interrupt the flow of fuel supply to the combustion chamber. You want to be sure to clean or replace dirty air filters.
Clogged or Dirty Air Filters
It is one of the most common problems that cause lawnmowers to sputter. The mowers take the air from the surrounding through air filters and mix it with fuel inside the engine. So, if the air filter is clogged or dirty, it will affect the flow of air into the carburetor.
If your lawnmower is starting and then stalling, the most likely issue is the carburetor. The most common issue is that the carburetor is dirty. Here`s what you need to know about how a dirty carburetor can cause a lawnmower to start, then stall out and die.
If the engine will idle but dies at full throttle the main jet in the carburetor may be plugged. You can repair a plugged main jet by cleaning it, replacing the jet, or replacing the carburetor. If you choose to clean or replace the main jet, you will also want to clean the rest of the carburetor.
A sputtering engine is a sign of a lean fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This can happen if you have a clogged somewhere in the fuel system that impedes the delivery of fuel into the chamber. For example, your fuel filter or fuel lines might be clogged.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
If the engine is low on power, it will bog down when you try to accelerate. This could be caused by a number of different issues, including low compression, a bad timing belt, sucking too much air, or even a head gasket leak.
You Lose Power in the Middle of Mowing:
Here`s why this happens and what you can do: Dirty Air Filter on Your Lawn Mower: Clean or replace. Dirty Spark Plug: Clean or replace. Build Up of Clippings & Debris: Clean underside of your lawn mower deck as noted above.
Blue or white smoke coming from your engine usually indicates burning oil, which can be caused by: Overfilling the crankcase with oil. Incorrect oil grades. Operating engine at greater than a 15 degree angle.
Broken, damaged or corroded wire. Timing. Improper spark plug gap. Faulty ignition coil.

Where is battery on craftsman self propelled mower
Unless it’s an electric start model there is none
My Self-propelled push lawn mower is no longer “self-propelled” while the wheels are on the ground. When not on the ground, the wheels engage but VERY slow.
Try putting new bail one it and see what that dose
9 out of 10 that’s what is
My toro 6.5 hp push mower (2010), has no fire to the plug. I have not abused it. i have a small yard and it just gets normal use. Now it won’t fire. I first changed the fuel and cleaned the carb thinking it was that crappy ethanol again. but i grounded out the spark plug and cranked it…no spark. I think it has to do with the lever you pull back to start it . they have some stupid complicated safety contraption that rides along the fly wheel when you pull back on the handle for starting and shutting off the engine. …it looks worn out already…like a mini brake pad. any ideas?…do i really have to replace this garbage every year or am i on the wrong path here?
Unhook your wire from the coil that goes to shut off mechanism, and see if you have spark then. the wire may be grounded out, or your coil might have took a ****
Self propelled mower will start but want stay running long? it runs about 3 or 4 min. then stop and when i restart it, it will start back up.
The fuel bowl has a float and needle, if the float isn’t floating to open the needle for gas to flow into the carb, it will cut off. A kit can be purchased for about $5 or take yours out and soak and clean then replace. Usually when these go bad its best to replace them.
Toro 149cc Lawn Mower Won't Start – Toro Lawn Mower With Toro Power Tools
Bad carburetor your old fuel jammed up the jet so it won’t get fuel and if it does it will start and shut off So replace the carb or try to clean the jet and run non oxy fuel only
How to replace the handle lever? – Toro Lawn Boy Self Propelled CARB Walk Power Mower
The handle just sits in a hole you should be able to pop it out fairly easy.
Mower starts and runs but has no power acts like its flooding it burns a lot more gas can barley pull it self
Sounds like maybe the choke is stuck closed. If you remove the air filter the choke is the first butterfly valve you can see. The throttle looks similar but is a inch or so deeper into the carb, and you can’t see that unless the choke is open. Try removing the air filter and starting the mower. It might run just a little better without the air filter since it will get a bit more air, but if the choke is stuck it still won’t run right. But you will be able to see if that’s the problem right off. If it runs great without the air filter, and the choke is not stuck, then the problem is a clogged air filter and you need to replace it.
My parents have a self propelled…front drive…walk behind 22in cut mower purchased at Home Depot 3 seasons ago…..I do the maintance on the mower….sharpen blade….change the oic/plug & airfilter….& after having only the 4th Toro in 58 years…I have to admit I have had several problems with this one. My Dad has the origional Toro in the shed….wrap the cord around the head of the engine….give it a yank & it still starts….a tank….anyway…my problem is as follows…
The mower starts on the 1st pull….I can mow for 15 min & it dies….wait 30 min…start….mow 5 min…dies & then just won’t start at all until the next day. HELP!!! My mother is 77 & she mows a large yard & the self propelled is easy on her!
Does the mower die right away (cuts out) or does it sputter to a halt. Sputtering out would indicate a fuel problem. If it just cuts out when hot, then more likely an ignition problem. Your coil may need replacing. Take a close look at the coil wire (spark plug wire) and its routing. Make sure it’s not touching part of the engine where it’s heating up and has caused a “leak” to ground it out when it gets hot. If all is well then check your spark when the engine is hot and cuts out. Make sure you have a very good blue spark and not a weak one (check it cold first and then compare!). Again, indicating a possible ignition coil problem. Hope this helps and best of luck to you. James
