17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor – CA Model

Lawn mower has been sitting out for a while, I tried to crank it and it doesn’t start . all of the plunger switches are good, fuse is good, there was some rubber in the fuel filter; cleaned the the tank and replaced the filter. Its like its not getting a spark, the plug is good . could it be the rectifier(3 prong connector)?
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Could be the rectifier, but also if there was rubber in the filter, you might want to remove the carb, and give it a good cleaning,ie pull the bowl, and remove all parts, clean out using compressed air to clean passage ways, and install a new needle, and seat kit, at minimum, also if it has been sitting, try sanding the flywheel, and armature bars on the coils, then remount and gap, also check the plugs gap, or even the plug it self can be new, but defective, also make sure all the contacts on the plugs are clean, use electrical cleaner spray, and lube replug everything back in, make sure that the battery has a full charge, and there are, also saftey switches in the seat that could be bad too, jus things to check and try, hope i was of some help

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
If a mower is hard to start, it may be the result of a dirty carburetor and/or a clogged air filter. Use a screwdriver to remove the carburetor and clean any dirt out of it with a rag. Clean the air filter or replace it if it`s disposable.
Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

A dirty carburetor is one of the most common causes for a lawn mower not being able to start after sitting unused for months or years at a time.

My Z5426 won’t start. When I pull out the choke and turn the key, gas starts leaking out of the exhaust system just before it gets to the muffler. Last time it did start, it ran really rough. So, I turn off the engine and then tried to restart and that’s when I noticed the fuel leak.
ANSWER : Maybe bad fuel, fuel line leaking, flooding of the carburetor, since it did start and ran rough I am assuming that the gas was left set and more then likely this gummed up the carburetor, you will have to clean/rebuild it. If you have a can of carburetor clean you may be able to spray that into there and clean it up, I would not choke it to start it as it sounds like it got/is flooded/ing. Good Luck Tim

ANSWER : Try this it may just need adjustment.

Look
on the carb for 2 screws side by side. where those screws go into the
carb, it will be stamped with an “H” and “L”. Open the screw that is
next to the “H”, counterclockwise about 1/4 turn at a time with the
engine running, that should solve it.
