Gas Mini – Tiller/Edger

Tiller approximately 2 years old. Worked great previously. Started to use it this year – always use fuel stabilizer. Above problem appeared with first use this year. Have cleaned carb twice but no help. Starts fine but will not idle nor reach previous high rpms. This walbro has no adjustments other than idle speed and I can’t figure out the idle circuit. Any ideas appreciated?Danny
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
I’m having the same problem. cleaned carb but didn’t help. I found that if I spray starting fluid on the gasket between the carb and the motor it speeds up. I’m going to try to find a new gasket, I can’t tighten it anymore.
Good luck

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

One of the most common problems, especially because rototillers often sit unused for months, is stale fuel or a clogged carburetor. If you know you have fresh fuel, you can check for carburetor blockage by spraying a small amount of carb cleaner into the intake and attempting to start the engine.
Tiller: Why won`t my tillers wheels or tines turn? A broken drive belt, bad transmission or problem with the clutch cable can prevent a tiller`s wheels and tines from turning. Check the drive belt and replace it if it`s worn or broken.
Why would the engine only run while the choke is on or with repeated manual priming? An engine that requires the choking ( partial or full ) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment.
You should change your tiller oil at least every spring, but ideally after every 50 hours of operation. Between oil changes, check your oil level before each use to ensure there`s enough oil present. Small amounts of oil may burn off during use, so you may need to occasionally top it off.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Using an undersized cord, a larger number cord gauge (AWG) than recommended in the chart, will cause a loss in power and overheating of the tiller.
Avoid tilling in wet soil as soil compaction can occur and lead to poor root penetration in the growing season. If it rains, it`s best to wait a few days to allow soil to become semi-dry.
After repeated use, the tines, or blades, dull and wear down. No matter what type or brand of tiller you own, these blades will need to be sharpened or replaced to keep your machine working properly.
Tiller blades are also known as tines. The tiller tine cultivates and moves through the soil. There are three types of tiller tines: Bolo, Pick and Chisel, and Slasher.
All Troy-Bilt tillers are shipped without oil in the engine, so the first thing you must do before starting and using your new tiller is add oil and fill the fuel tank. The engines in these tillers run on unleaded gasoline. Oil is added separately and is not mixed with the fuel.

The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the engine for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.

Starts but does not stay running – Craftsman Gas Mini – Tiller/Edger
ANSWER : Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Sometimes you can get by with priming it a few times, and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor. If the mower is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that youbuy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm willget hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank. When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, count the number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position. That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turnsthey were in/out.Please rate me, ThanksGood Luck, I hope this helped

I own a 2 cycle mini tiller craftsman and I need a manual for it. I want to tune up tiller it’s blowing smoke.
ANSWER : Manuals for many Craftsman tools are available here: http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals . Lots of tillers are listed just by searching for Craftsman tiller. If you can find the model number (usually on a plaque on the housing of the tiller), you can narrow down the list greatly. I hope this helps. Cindy Wells
