My kohler 18hp shoots fuel out of the muffler and there is gas in the oil. It will start but backfires and stalls as if it is flooding out.

You should see a strong spark between the tester`s terminals when the engine is cranking. If there is no spark, this indicates that the spark plug is defective and should be replaced. Need help finding your model number? The carburetor might be clogged.
If your mower engine is a Honda or Kohler, the fix is simple. Honda and Kohler`s surging is commonly caused by a blocked idle jet see “Gas starvation” towards the end of the page.
The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the engine for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
Clogged Fuel Injectors

If the car cranks when you turn the key, but the engine won`t start, it could be because fuel isn`t getting to the engine. One potential reason for this could be dirty fuel injectors. Over time, the fuel injector nozzles can become clogged with rust, corrosion or debris.

The problem may involve an annoying change (up/down) of engine speed while cruising at a steady pace, a low drop (or even cut-out) at idle or when approaching a stop, a wild high engine speed of several thousand rpm followed by a drop to near zero, etc.
Engine Surging Can Be an Early Warning Sign of Ignition Problems. Engine surging is usually a warning sign that your car or truck is having combustion problems. Since a vehicle`s ignition wires and spark plugs play a major role in proper engine performance, it is likely time to check your engine`s electrical components …
Lack of lubrication: The most common cause of engine failure is dirty or low oil, which can be the result of an oil leak, faulty oil pump, the oil burning too fast, or driving too long in between oil changes.
Just like your vehicle or lawn mower needs a battery to spark the ignition process, a Kohler standby generator needs a battery to start its engine.
This occurs because most seals are not perfect (nor are the cylinders perfectly rounded), or there is an opening through the cylinder crosshatches, and this causes the migration of fuel and exhaust gases into the areas where the oil is used.
The most common reasons a Chevrolet Spark won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
If there isn`t any spark visible when kicking the engine over, follow these steps: (1) Check the metal cap on top of the spark plug and make sure it is tight. Give it a gentle twist with a pair of pliers if it isn`t. (2) Make sure that the spark plug lead wire is solidly connected to the spark plug cap.
