How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Checking for debris or damaged blades: Visually inspect the blades and confirm there is no debris stopping the blades from moving. If there is debris ensure the machine is powered off when removing any blockages. Check the blades for any damage as a damaged cutting blade could cause the machine to stop working.
It`s not necessary to lubricate the blades of a hedge trimmer to prevent rusting because they are pre-hardened rust resistant steel. However, you can use a lubricant to clean the blades, we recommend a light spray on lubricant such as WD-40 to give a thin coating.
Brush Cutter Hedge Trimmer Attachment Can Be Fitted in brush Cutter and that Brush Cutter can be used As Hedge Trimmer. A hedge trimmer, shrub trimmer, or bush trimmer is a gardening tool or machine used for trimming (cutting, pruning) hedges or solitary shrubs (bushes).
With a severed cord, your hedge trimmer is virtually worthless. With a small amount of money and a little ingenuity, however, you can repair the cord and have the trimmer running. If the cord left attached to the trimmer is long enough to be useable, then you simply can add a new plug to its end.
Trimmers Stopped working

If your trimmer won`t turn on, especially if it has not been used recently, you may simply have a drained battery. Plug your trimmer into your charger and see if anything happens. Ideally your trimmer will recognize it has been connected to a power source and charge its battery.

For best operation and longer blade life, lubricate the hedge trimmer blade with a lightweight machine oil before and after each use.
Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant. Fact: While the “W-D” in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, WD-40 Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product`s formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.
What is the difference between a hedge trimmer and a hedge cutter? Usually, hedge trimmers are used for `light work` on branches and bushes. Tidying up and shaping shrubs is another of their functions. However, heavy-duty work is more suited to hedge cutters, for example, breaking down big branches and thicker bushes.
A strimmer is the same as a grass trimmer but is the colloquial term for the tool. This garden appliance is handheld and uses a nylon line as a plastic blade to cut grass and trim around the edges of the lawn. A strimmer is not the same as a hedge trimmer which is more of a saw for trees and hedges.
So what oil do you use on a hedge trimmer? Use 3 in 1 oil or SAE20 engine oil to lubricate the blades of a hedge trimmer. Any grade engine oil will work well. Give them an oiling every 30 minutes or use, before, and after use.

The trimmer line is crossed on the spool: If the trimmer line becomes crossed on the spool while being loaded, this can cause it to refuse to come out during trimming. Be sure to load trimmer string onto the trimmer straight without crossing over the lines to avoid this problem while trimming.

Blades wont move when power connected. Stripped it down. Motor is fine. I think it must be the gears attached to the blade unit
ANSWER : Either the gears, OR SOME machines have a “CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH” [a safety feature] between the engine and the blades.

IF your machine has this feature, then it’s possible that the clutch has worn out and is slipping so badly that the blade won’t move.

My hedge trimmer will not start… Put in new gas
ANSWER : It’s not getting gas, due to being gummed up with old gas. Remove all of the old gas and mix up a batch of fresh gas&oil. Also get some carb cleaner. Put just a little of the gas&oil mix plus an equal part carb cleaner. Try to start it just to work the new mixture through the carb. You might use the spray start to help pull the new gas through. If it fires up on the new gas&oil&carbcleaner mix, shut it off and let it sit for an hour or two. Drain it out and try just a little gas&oiil without the carb cleaner. If all is well fill the tank. If not, repeat the whole process. If you can’t clear the gum this way you may have to remove the carb to clean it.
Good luck.

I have pulled the cord out of my gas powered trimmer. What is the easiest way to fix this
ANSWER : Remove the pull start mechanism, remove the old rope from the inside plastic, thread a new rope through the hole in the outside and through the hole in the plastic center where you removed the old rope, Now reach between the spool and the edge of the casing and pull some slack in the rope, there will be a notch in the spool, set the rope into the notch and begin spinning the spool to make tension in the spring ( correct direction is the same way the rope is spooled in. go until you have good tension on spring, grab rope left outside casing and pull through, then let rope get pulled into the spool with the spring tension you have created. Now just reattach the handle.
