Blue or white smoke coming from your engine usually indicates burning oil, which can be caused by: Overfilling the crankcase with oil. Incorrect oil grades. Operating engine at greater than a 15 degree angle.
Oil Consumption Into Combustion Area

The most frequent place to check for an oil leakage is between worn valve guides and valve stems. Check for old and worn components such as pistons, piston rings and liners. It is also imperative to check for clogged oil return galleries in the bearings.

A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
Burning oil is often the result of worn-out parts. For example, worn valve seals and/or piston rings could lead to your car burning oil. Both valve seals and piston rings work to keep engine oil out of the combustion chamber.
As a general rule of thumb, you should change your oil after 50 hours of use or at least once a year. Regular oil changes keep your lawn mower in top condition, ensuring it runs smoothly and lasts for years to come. With proper maintenance, you can keep your lawn looking great without any hassles.
Under normal operating conditions, excess oil consumption is generally a mechanical problem. In the majority of cases where oil consumption problems have been investigated, it usually turns out to be a leak issue – either the valve cover gasket is leaking, crankshaft seals leaking, or one of the main seals is leaking.
As the fuel level drops, a vacuum begins to form in the fuel tank because air can get in to fill the space the consumed fuel occupied. After about 10 or 15 minutes, the vacuum will become strong enough that fuel will stop flowing to the carburetor and the lawnmower will die.
The most common cause of a mower that runs for thirty minutes and then dies is a faulty armature. A faulty gas cap is the second most likely cause.
However, ‌the capacity of the oil tank on a 4.5-hp Craftsman lawnmower engine is 20 fl. oz.
NEO 15W – 40 is designed to last 3 to 6 times longer than petroleum base oils in heavy vehicles. In passenger car service, it lasts up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
While it`s normal for some cars to burn more oil than others, it`s best to have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible if you experience consistently low levels. Losing too much oil can lead to serious engine damage and expensive repairs, especially among older cars with 100,000 miles or more on the odometer.
An overfull oil reservoir may also cause white or blue smoke. Ensure you didn`t overfill the mower by checking the oil level with the dipstick located on the reservoir. To do this, remove the dipstick cap, wipe off the stick with a rag, and reinsert it into the reservoir.

Overfilled oil reservoir: Too much oil in the reservoir can also cause a lawn mower to smoke. The lubrication systems in most mowers are not well sealed, and usually there`s an overflow oil reservoir with a relief outlet where excess oil can leak.
