How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
The pull cord mechanism on a lawn mower isn`t complicated, and the reason your cord isn`t catching is that one of the components of the flywheel starter assembly has failed under the stress of regular use. Typically it`s either worn or broken pawls, or a damaged pulley system.
Some common issues that can lead to a cord being harder to pull are hydro locking, which usually occurs because of oil spilling into the exhaust area, and a misshapen crankshaft. The misshapen shaft can generally be detected due to the noise it makes. The off-ness of the shape causes the cord to be hard to pull.
The problem may be in the recoil starter itself. A tangled coil of rope or a broken spring may be the problem. In many cases the recoil starter is easily replaced as a single assembly. DO NOT attempt do take the starter apart.
The most common reason for the cord refusing to rewind is a broken or worn out recoil spring. This tiny spring hooks onto the pulley and is stretched out when you pull the cord; when you let go the spring is meant to snap back to its original position.
When the rope`s grip is pulled, the rope uncoils, tensions the spring, engages the clutch and turns the crankshaft, spinning it to crank or start the engine before the end of the pull stroke. The running of the engine then disengages the clutch.
In this case, the vertical component of the applied force acts in the direction of the weight of the mower. This the effective weight of the mower. Since the effective weight of the lawn mower is lesser in the first case, pulling the lawn mower is easier than pushing it.
Blade obstruction occurs when something is blocking or stopping the blade from moving and makes your pull cord hard to pull. This issue commonly occurs when there is small debris lodged between the blade and the mower deck or when you are starting your lawn mower in the yard.
Snowblower pull cord commonly snaps back because the flywheel shear key has broken. The shear key helps maintain the flywheel crankshaft relationship. When the shear key breaks, the engine timing is off, which causes the pull cord to snap back sharply.

ANSWER : EASY,REMOVE TOP COVER OF ENGINE THAT HOUSES ROPE ASSY. LOOK UNDERNEATH PLASTIC PIECE,CUT THE KNOT OFF THAT COMES THROUGH HOLE AND PULL AND EXISTANT ROPE OUT. OK, GET NEW ROPE AND HANDLE TOGETHER,THE END THAT IS OPPOSITE FROM NEW PULL STRING HANDLE YOU ARE GOING TO USE. CAREFULLY WIND UP ROPE HOUSING NICE AND FIRM JUST BY WINDING IT UP WITH HAND IN AS IT SITS IN TOP COVER. WHEN YOU THINK IT HAS ENOUGH TO PULL ROPE IN FEED END OF ROPE IN HOLE AND IN CHANNEL OF ROPE HOUSING,THERE IS A SMALL HOLE TO LINE IT UP WITH,WHEN SEE THE ROPE END FEED IT THROUGH THAT HOLE NOW. MAKE TAKE ANOTHER SET OF HANDS OR A WEDGE TO STOP RETRACTING OF SPRING. PULL ROPE THROUGH AND TIE A DOUBLE KNOT AT END SO IT WONT PULL THROUGH. SLOWLY LET IT PULL ROPE IN,THEN PULL ROPE BY HANDLE FULL LENGTH TO ENSURE ALL KINKS ARE OUT AND IT PULLS BACK IN LIKE IT SHOULD.
