The distance between the tip of the spark plug and the central electrode is called the “spark plug gap” and is a key factor in the function of a spark plug. Spark plug gaps for car engines are typically 0.6 to 1.8 mm (0.024 to 0.071 in).
In general, a light tan/gray color tells you that the spark plug is operating at optimum temperature and that the engine is in good condition.

Why Is The Spark Plug Gap Important? The spark plug gap influences the heat range of the spark produced to ignite the air fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This makes it critical to engine performance.
Do Spark Plugs Always Have to Be Gapped? Not always. In the past, it was necessary to gap spark plugs, but today spark plugs are usually pre-gapped. It is advisable to double check that the gap is correctly set to the vehicle`s recommended setting when installing spark plugs.
Tighten the spark plug finger-tight until the gasket reaches the cylinder head, then tighten about ½ – ⅔ turn more with a spark plug wrench.
The most common signs of bad spark plugs include start-up trouble, rough idling, sluggish acceleration, declining fuel economy, engine misfiring, and engine knocking.
Black, dry soot on the electrodes and insulator tip indicates a carbon-fouled plug. This can be caused by a dirty air filter, excessive driving at low speeds, too rich of a fuel/air mixture or idling your vehicle for too long.
A worn or excessive gap will cause an ignition coil to work overtime, using more voltage to bridge the gap and create a spark inside the cylinder. This increase in voltage stresses the internals of not only the ignition coil but, in certain circumstances, the driver of the ECU.
If the gap is too great, the engine may not start as easily. If the gap is too small (< 0.30mm), there is the risk that the coil and flywheel might touch as the flywheel heats up and expands when the engine is run.
A smaller gap will yield a short, intense spark and will usually make the engine real responsive. A wide gap creates a longer spark arc but without sufficient “juice” from your ignition system, (including amps), it can be weak and yellow in color.
The gap adjustment can be fairly critical, and if it is maladjusted the engine may run badly, or not at all. A narrow gap may give too small and weak a spark to effectively ignite the fuel-air mixture, while a gap that is too wide might prevent a spark from firing at all.

At the top of the list, we have the NGK Spark Plugs. With iridium as its core material, this spark plug pack can operate at a much wider heat range as compared to ordinary spark plugs made out of platinum or copper.
As the spark plugs wear, the spark plug gaps widen, also weakening MPG. This is because the wider the spark plug gap, the more voltage is required to arch between the electrodes. The smoother the combustion process, the lower the demand for engine power and the lower the demand for fuel.
Wet Fouling, 2-Stroke
The appearance will be the same as a wet-fouled 4-stroke plug. Causes include the wrong plug (too cold), excessive idling, improper fuel:oil mix ratio or carburetor adjustment set too rich.
Whether the spark plugs are fitted in a lawnmower, boat, or a race car, the spark plug tip temperature must remain between 500C-850°C.
Two Common Mistakes While Changing Sparkplugs
Possibly the two most common mistakes made with handling sparkplugs—aside from installing the wrong type for your engine—is damaging the spark plug cables by pulling on them; and, misapplying dielectric connector grease to your plugs.
Make Sure the Engine Is Cold
On top of that, changing a spark plug with a warm engine head can damage the threads that hold it in place.
While you should buy spark plugs in matching sets for your vehicle, not all spark plugs are universal. Spark plugs come in different sizes with different gaps and are manufactured using a variety of metals.
Iridium spark plugs are better at starting engines than other types of spark plug because the spark is highly concentrated in the central electrode, and consequentially requires less voltage to operate. This makes ignitions faster and more reliable, and also reduces power consumption.
NGK doesn`t recommend adjusting the plug gap more than . 008″ in either direction. Beyond that slight adjustment, the ground electrode and center electrode won`t align properly, hindering spark plug performance and drastically reducing plug life.
