The two most common reasons a chainsaw won`t idle are a blocked air filter and an idle screw out of adjustment. Other possible causes include: Dirty Air Filter. Idle Screw out of Adjustment.
The carburetor regulates the ratio of air and fuel that enters the engine. If extra air enters the mixture after the carburetor, the ratio will become lean, which will increase the engine RPMs. This air can enter through the gasket on the carburetor if the gasket it loose or damaged.
To fix the problem, start by
draining the gas tank. Replace the old gas with a fresh mix of gas, being sure to add a stabilizer to keep the ethanol from gelling. Often, just getting fresh gas and stabilizer through the chainsaw`s fuel system may correct the saw and it should stay running.
In the case that your chainsaw runs for a while, then dies, it may be possible to simply clean the air filter to correct this symptom. However, a damaged air filter should be replaced. Regular checks of the air filter for buildup should be part of your regular chainsaw maintenance routine.
Carburetor Idle Adjustment
The most probable – and easiest to fix – cause of chain rotation while the chainsaw engine idles is a poorly adjusted idle setting on the carburetor. The result is that too much fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber when the throttle is released, and the engine doesn`t really slow.
This can be caused by a variety of things, including low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch pads, or a problem with the torque converter. Another possible cause of over revving is an issue with the engine itself. This could be something as simple as a dirty air filter or spark plugs that need to be replaced.
Tips on starting a flooded chainsaw
If you have tried several times unsuccessfully to start your unit, it is most likely flooded, especially so if you can smell gas. Flooded means there is excessive fuel pumped into the engine which has displaced the vital ingredient of oxygen for starting.
The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is often caused by leaving fuel in the chainsaw for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the chainsaw engine to stall.
If your saw idles fine, and then bogs down when pressing the throttle, then adjust your `H` screw by unscrewing. This will increase the amount of fuel to the carburetor under load. If your saw idles fine, then runs lumpy with a lot of smoke when pressing the throttle, then adjust your `H` screw by screwing in.
If your chainsaw still starts and then stops working, check the air filter. Clean or replace the air filter if it is dirty or damaged. Another reason that your chainsaw starts and then stops working could be that the spark arrestor is dirty or clogged. If this is the case, clean it with a wire brush.

How do you adjust high, low, and throttle on echo 3400 chainsaw
ANSWER : Ok, this is an easy job, and a quick tune up. First start up your saw, rev it some so it warms up. Next, make sure your saw idles, if not just turn up the idle a bit first before this. With your saw idling on the ground, turn the L screw about 1 turn either side of where it is, and listen to obtain the fastest and smoothest idle, that takes care of the L screw. Now the H screw must be adjusted while the the saw is at full throttle, turn the H screw and listen for maximum and smoothest engine speed. I sugest this be done with the chain and bar removed from the saw. After you adjust the L and H, then adjust idle to suit.

ANSWER : You’ll have to do a visual on this one. But you turn it out until the throttle plate just starts to move, where it can get a little air. This is the initial start position and you can fine tune afterwards.
