How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The fuel line may be clogged from stale fuel deposits, more reasons to cause your chainsaw to cut out when applying throttle. If a fuel line is cracked, it will leak gasoline and draw air from outside into the fuel line. If the line is leaking fuel, it needs to be replaced.
The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is often caused by leaving fuel in the chainsaw for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the chainsaw engine to stall.
The most likely culprit is a dirty or clogged air filter. Issues with your fuel pump or fuel filter can also cause your engine to idle then die with any throttle. If you have an older car, it could also be a bad carburetor.
Fuel: Make sure it is fresh and correctly mixed (see `Starting Issues`). Air filter: Make sure it is clean and unclogged. Fuel cap: Make sure it`s hand-tight. Please ensure when you are attempting to use the chainsaw that the chain brake is disengaged.
Generally, two-stroke chainsaw engines are built to conveniently run at full throttle without an engine breakdown. Therefore, running at any throttle speed below the full throttle is not advised. Cutting a thick wood or timber while running at a low speed or throttle can cause the blades of the chainsaw to become dull.
There are many factors that can stop your chainsaw from running, including a bad spark plug or dirty air filter. There are simple problems: a broken fuel line, bad fuel, wrongly calibrated high-low adjustment screw. Also, more complex issues like a damaged carburettor or an engine compression problem.
Today, McCulloch offers a complete line of garden products: powerful chainsaws, sturdy trimmers, lawnmowers, garden tractors and hedge trimmers.
There are three major causes for a stalled engine: A lack of fuel, a lack of air flow and improper ignition. Running out of fuel is one of the most common causes of engine stalling, but dirty fuel injectors or a plugged fuel filter can also be the culprit. Your engine needs air to run properly as well.
The carburetor might need to be replaced.

It could be damaged or old and no longer functioning. To test the carburetor, remove the air filter, pour a teaspoon of fuel into it, and pull the starter rope. If the engine starts momentarily and then dies, the carburetor is likely why the chainsaw won`t start.

If the carburetor is clogged, it may only work with the choke engaged, which is not a good way to be running your engine. Cleaning the carburetor and replacing some of the internal parts with a new carb kit is a great way to get your carburetor running properly again.
Storing regular petrol inside a machine can cause blockages and gumming to the intricate fuel delivery parts, so the most important thing to remember is that whether you`re storing a chainsaw or garden power tool such as a petrol lawn mower you should store your tool without any fuel in it.
STIHL currently recommends that you do not store or use fuel older than 60 days, and preferably no longer than 30 days, even with a stabilizer. Read more about storing your outdoor power equipment.
How long the chainsaw runs before dying depends on how badly clogged the air filter is. In the case that your chainsaw runs for a while, then dies, it may be possible to simply clean the air filter to correct this symptom. However, a damaged air filter should be replaced.
The carburetor regulates the ratio of air and fuel that enters the engine. If extra air enters the mixture after the carburetor, the ratio will become lean, which will increase the engine RPMs. This air can enter through the gasket on the carburetor if the gasket it loose or damaged.

Husky 455 dies out at full throttle or under load
ANSWER : Your carb may be the issue but your ignition coil could be the culprit. Once they start going bad, they can act up intermittently or give various symptoms from day to day. The fact that your saw dies at full load or under load, probably means that when your saw gets hot or requires more spark, your coil is not able to provide it. Your carb is easy enough to clean out, you can take it all apart and clean all screens, etc….

I just replaced my coil due to the exact same symptoms and now my saw runs great. $60 off ebay and you can put it on in 15 minutes yourself. Check your carb first though

My Poulan will start and run fine, but when i give it gas it revs up and dies every time. Ive messed with it some, and ive noticed if i close the choke right before it dies, it keeps cutting, but i have to keep my fingers on the choke which is very burdensome. Im not sure what it is!
ANSWER : Afternoon Jacob;
If you must choke it for it to run it is to lean. Have you cleaned the air filter? Might be good idea. An air leak can also cause this inspect the intake for a loose or defective connection at the engine or carburetor.
If these are good try to adjust the “H” needle valve CCW (richer) a little.
You can find a very good description of adjustment here:
Carburetor Adjustment by Madsens.com
http://www.madsens1.com/saw%20carb%20tune.htm
CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.
There are 2 wav (sound – idle & full – may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too. Good Luck
