How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
Wear and Tear Depending on how often the little machine starts and its age, the inside of the bulb will eventually get gooey, causing it to stick. If a brittle bulb cracks around the seal, air will leak out the side rather than force fuel from the tank into the bulb, also causing a collapse.
Over time, the spark arrestor can become clogged with soot. If the spark arrestor is clogged, the chainsaw may run stall or run rough. To unclog the spark arrestor, remove it and clean it with a wire brush. You can also replace the spark arrestor.
Can You Use Isopropyl Alcohol Or Paint Thinners To Get Rid Of Primer? It is easy to remove paint thinner. Simply use a clean rag to apply turpentine or mineral spirits to the surface until the primer is fully removed. You can even use a toothbrush and paint thinner to remove the primer.
ANSWER: The primer bulb, which is located in the fuel line between the gas tank and the engine, is used to fill the carburetor with fuel when the engine is started cold.
Dirty Carburetor (air+fuel) If fuel sits in the system for too long, the carburetor (and the engine and fuel lines) can become sticky and clog. Remove the air filter and spray the carburetor with carb cleaner—an aerosolized acetone spray made to remove the gunk.
Q: How do I mix gas and oil? A: Mix 3.2 ounces of Poulan 2-cycle air cooled engine oil to one gallon of fresh unleaded gasoline to obtain the recommended 40:1 fuel to oil ratio.
Restricted Fuel Lines The engine can be suffocated from gasoline when at peak demand for fuel if there is any slight restriction or debris in the fuel lines. The fuel line may be clogged from stale fuel deposits, more reasons to cause your chainsaw to cut out when applying throttle.
There are many factors that can stop your chainsaw from running, including a bad spark plug or dirty air filter. There are simple problems: a broken fuel line, bad fuel, wrongly calibrated high-low adjustment screw. Also, more complex issues like a damaged carburettor or an engine compression problem.

My poulan pro 42cc starts normally, then as I begin cutting it boggs down and nearly stalls. As it warms up it seems to get worse, esp. if I turn it on the side to cut. I’ve cleaned it all up and checked the fuel lines. They are intact and no leaks or clogs detected. The only notable change is the primer bulb takes a little longer to return after pressing. It seems to idle fine and run good untill under work load.
Thanks for your help. Chas
