Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
If it’s a newer mower, the choke is probably an automatic choke. When you crank on it, it will choke itself. So if it’s not starting for you, there may be something wrong with it. Did you hear it run before you bought it?Jim
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
If your lawnmower will start and run with the choke on but dies when the choke is turned off, it may have a problem with the carburetor. The carburetor brings air and fuel together and mixes them in the perfect ratio for combustion before they enter the engine.
If the choke is left on for too long, excess fuel flows into the combustion chamber, causing it to seize up and stall. If this happens, the lawn mower will need to sit idle for several hours to allow the fuel to drain out of the chamber. Turn off the choke and try again later.
Pulling the choke lever provides proper fuel-starting mixture when the engine is cold. When attempting to start a cold engine, pull the choke lever outward to close. Slowly return the choke to the open position as the engine warms. Leave the choke in the OFF/OPEN position when starting or restarting a warm engine.
phrasal verb. choke something off. to prevent or limit something. High prices have choked off demand.
This is the same for any type of garment printing including screen printing. The Choke setting slightly reduces the outside dimensions of the Underbase so that white ink does not appear outside the prints edges of the final color pass.
Turn on the ignition of your car. Once the engine is warm, you can remove the air filter and check whether the choke is open or closed. At this point, the choke should be open to allow the engine to breathe fully.
The lawn mower should be operated with the choke on for no longer than five minutes. Allowing your lawn mower to operate with the choke on will give rise to several problems like irregularity in engine power performance and excessive consumption of fuel.
The engine performs better with the right fuel mixture, so the choke should be slowly backed off as the engine warms. Once it reaches, operating temperature, the fuel and air mixture is regulated by the throttle plate and carburetor. Some carburetors have automatic chokes that ease the choke off as the engine warms up.
Why would the engine only run while the choke is on or with repeated manual priming? An engine that requires the choking (partial or full) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment.
If a motorcycle or ATV only runs with the choke on, it`s because the richer “choke on” mixture is actually closer to the engine`s normal operating fuel mixture than the leaner “choke off” mixture. So when the choke is turned off, the engine gets too little fuel and too much air for it to run and it stalls.
If your bike is only running with the choke on, it`s probably because it`s running too lean. This can be caused by a few different things: All internal combustion engines need three things to run: fuel, air, and spark. If any of these are missing or not working properly, the engine won`t run.

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.
Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.
I have had a poulan pro 550 series push mower for almost 1 year at the end of the season last year the mower would start briefly and then stop. i have cleaned out the air filter and that did not help.the mower started, i made one revolution around the yard 3/4th of the way the mower quit. I then primed the mower it started then quit and now it will not start at all. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do. Thanks
There is a little spring that works the carburetor arm. If that popped off then the mower will not run.
Choke stuck After adding gas, tried to restart (Series 2000 CC Lawn tractor) but choke will not pull out, and tractor will not start. Lubrication did not help. Hope you can help!
You may have to replace the choke cable assembly. Sometimes they rust to outer sleeve
Lawn mower motor runs good, the drive wheels run good but the blade won’t stay enguaged. Thanks
Check your cable that controls the blade engagement.

My toro lawn mower is hard to start in cold weather. (40 to 50 degrees), I have an auto-choke. mower was bought in spring of 2010.
This is covered by the Warranty. Take it to a local dealer like www.arcolawn.com and have the thermostat replaced. The first generation thermostats are known for sticking.Good luckJoe
Poulan 21” self propelled mower – new spark plug but still won’t start. Receiving no spark nor any kind of indication mower wants to start. Fresh gas and oil. All filters clean. Sworn at multiple x still won’t start. Mower is 2 years old. No previous problems of any type with this mower.
Try putting a SMALL amount of gas in the carb and see if it will start, if it does, it is a fuel problem, if it does not it is probably an electrical one
I have a 2 year old Toro push lawn mower that will not start. Everything has been tried: new plug, new gas, new air filter, even tried starter fluid. There is not even a sputter.
