Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
If its a two stroke mower it meeds 2 stroke gas. Fairly cheap for little oil bottle and a gallon of gas. Most two cycles use a 50:1 ratio.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

In an emergency you can use standard motor oil until you can find 2-cycle oil. Not to be used for long periods as you risk higher carbon deposits in the combustion paths.
Many years ago, you could use SAE 30 in place of 2 stroke oil, but since about 1960, the additives in normal engine oil will cause ash deposits in the combustion chamber of a 2 stroke engine. These deposits will build up and cause severe ignition problems and eventual engine failure.
So if you have a four stroke or four cycle engine (most all cars, plus some small lawnmower engines), the use normal motor oil of the recommended viscosity and weight, added to the oil sump to keep it full.
Using a 4-stroke oil in a 2-stroke engine can therefore disrupt combustion and cause smoke formation and engine degradation.
The relevant difference between regular lubricating oil and two-stroke oil is that the latter must have a much lower ash content, to minimize deposits that tend to form if ash is present in the oil when it is burned in the engine`s combustion chamber.
Two-stroke (two-cycle) engines require you to mix the oil with the gas in exact amounts so the oil acts as a lubricant for the crankcase, while four-stroke engines take oil and gas separately.
You can use any higher octane petrol too, but there is no benefit in doing that. Traditionally, “Regular” grade (lowest lead content) petrol was recommended for 2-stroke motorbikes. Due to the higher running temperature of 2-strokes, lead would build up on the ceramic insulator in the plug and cause fouling.
Passenger car motor oils also contain friction modifiers which could lead to slipping and acceleration loss in a motorcycle. And modern cars require lower viscosity motor oils that may not protect gears properly in a motorcycle and could lead to gear failure.
Car oil is similar to lawn mower oil, and you can use it in lawn mowers with four-stroke engines. However, car oil has a high concentration of additives and can damage smaller engines.
The 2-stroke oil base can be castor, petroleum, semi-synthetic, or synthetic. Modern two-strokes use synthetic oil to avoid high emissions and oily formations on spark plugs.
A. No matter hold old, 2-cycle engines perform better and longer with oils specifically designed for that use. 2-cycle oils will be consumed during combustion in the piston chamber. Therefore, must be formulated with specific additive chemistry and base oils.

Dont know what type of oil to use – Toro Power Lawn Mower
ANSWER : Put straight 30 weight motor oil in it. Not 10W30 or any multi-viscosity oil. Straight 30 weight motor oil. If you’re doing a complete oil change, then you may want to use Synthetic 30 weight, which will last longer between oil changes and also make your engine last longer (but it costs more too). Best of luck to you.James

What kind of oil do i use to mix with gas for my Poulan gas trimmer. Can i use WD30 motor oil or does it have to specifically say its for 2stroke engines? the ratio on the trimmer says 40:1 so i assume this is 4 oz oil per gallon?
ANSWER : DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL!!! There is a special 2-stroke engine oil mix that you can purchase at various stores that have outdoor equipment or you can also find mix at Walmart. There are instructions for proper mixing on the bottle.Remember not to put 2-stroke mixed fuel in your lawn mower unless it is also 2-stroke (rare). And the converse is also true, do not put your 4-stroke lawn mower fuel in your 2-stroke weed eater. If this is really helpful, please rate.

I have MTD Yard machine and don’t know if it is 2 or 4 cycle. Oil should be-SAE30. Can I use oil for 4-cycle which they soid me i Can. Tire.(M otomaster)
ANSWER : If your mower has seperate fill caps for the oil and the gasoline, then you have a 4 cycle or 4 stroke engine. In this case use SAE HD30 motor oil. If there is only 1 fill cap and it says oil & fuel mix, then you have a 2 cycle or 2 stroke engine.
Good luck

My Lawn mower seems to be produced by ALKO, but has the Briggs and Stratton emblem also. It is the 40b model and having just inherited it, I am trying to find out if I put just petrol in or whether I need an oil additive. If I need oil, which do I need? the mower works on unleaded, but not sure if this requires 2 or 4 stroke oil and at what mixture. Please help(aaaagggghhhh!!!!)
ANSWER : Hi scottcoles5…
The easy way to find out if the motor is 2 or 4 cycle is to check to see if the engine has oil in the crankcase…if it does it is a 4 cycle and you will NOT have to mix oil with your gas. 2 cycle engines do NOT have an oil in the crancase and depend on the oil you mix with your gasoline.
You can also check the color of the gasoline in the tank, most 2 cycle oils contain a colorant to color the gas to let you know there is oil in the gas…

What type of oil does a troy built tiller use? I have lost my book.
ANSWER : This is dependent upon what the engine application on the tiller is. If it’s 2-stroke, use a quality synthetic or semi-synthetic 2-stroke oil mixed with the gas. If it has a 4 stroke engine use SAE30 oil, unless you run synthetic (which I highly recommend), then you can use a multi-viscosity oil if you like, say 10W-30.
