20 hp 42 in. Deck Yard Tractor
Is there a special trick or tool used to install a new v-belt on a craftsman 18.5 hp 42 in. deck.
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Hi donrlynnWhat happened to the old belt, did it get old and you just wanted to put a new one on or did it break while operating? If it broke during operation then it is possible that you have a pulley that is off of alignment and needs to be fixed first otherwise the belts will keep breaking. If that isn’t the case then you should find one pulley that is the tensioner pulley on the bottom. This is easier if you have more help. You need to wind the belt as the diagram shows through every pulley except for the biggest one. Then you need to compress the tensioner pulley as much as you can and then gradually ease the belt around the biggest pulley. You can use a flat screwdriver or other similar tool to pry it over the lip of the pulley. Be careful, don’t hurt yourself and let me know if you have anything further to ask about this.Thank you for using Fixya and good luckbestdarngood

A common cause of belt breakage is excessive grass clippings on the deck. Grass clippings can work their way under pulleys and deck covers, causing series problems. Make sure to clean off your deck after every mower use and follow manufacturer recommendations.

To replace the output belt also known as a toothed belt or timed belt, we need to remove the deck from the mower. It`s not difficult to do, and the whole job shouldn`t take more than an hour.
The “Deck Belt” goes around the pulleys right above the blades on the deck and then to a double pulley. The “Drive Belt” on your mower goes from the transmission, around an Idler pulley then over to the double pulley I mentioned before. The Drive belt also plays a role in making the wheels turn.
There is no specific time length that mower belts need to be replaced. Some belts may last longer than others due to different operating conditions. One thing is for certain though, the more the mower is used, the sooner you will need to consider replacing the mower belt.

I have a husqvarna 323L string trimmer. I stored it after running the tank & carb dry for about two years. I fueled it, then started it, & it ran for a minute then died like I turned the switch off. Since it would not restart, I found the fuel filter had broken off the hardened fuel line & it sucked gummy crap out of the tank & into the carb. Failing at cleaning the carb, I finally put a new carb on it & replaced the pump, hoses & filter. It has ran good till this year. I winterized it with stabilizer & left it with a full tank over the winter. The gas in the tank was gone when I got ready to use it this year. I filled the tank with premix, checked for leaks, then started it. It would run fine for about half a tank, start idling poorly (lean) then cutoff & refuse to restart till I refilled the tank. I finally found the tank had cracks & was letting pressure out of the tank & apparently this was causing the carb to lose it’s ability to siphon gas out of the tank. So I replaced the tank which came with new hoses & a filter, which I properly installed to the carb. It cranked right up, but when it runs a half tank, the carb quits sucking gas out of the tank. When I pump to prime the carb, it moves the fuel into the carb, but the pump never gets hard like it does when I prime the carb when the motor is cold. I have to keep refilling the tank, prime, & then it starts & runs until the tank gets about half empty. The new fuel filter is down in the gas tank properly, but It will not run after it shuts off until I refill the tank & prime. I’m baffled. New tank, new hoses, new filter, new carb, & I can find no leaks in the fuel system. It runs strong. The 323L is a two-stroke & it always cranks on the second pull from cold on a full tank. Any ideas?
When installing new drive belt on ModelYTH 1848XP how do you
get the new belt over the the electric clutch pulley.
ANSWER : Hello,
This is going to be a fun project, just kidding this is a pretty difficult job. I am glad you are asking.
The first thing is, you can’t get the belt over the clutch. You need to disconnect the battery and the two wire connector going to the clutch. Then you need to remove the colt holding the clutch on. Be carefull not to drop it, it is about 10 lbs, so be ready for it to fall off when the bolt is removed. There will be a flat washer that comes off too, just remember the order when reinstalling. That was the easy part. Now you have the drive pully on the bottom of the engine, this is going to be fun again ( just kidding, I have done…..well alot of these and they all are frustrating at one point or another), the pully just “slides” down the crankshaft. Well, it is suposed too. If it is old, or sat outside……it will probably not just “slide” off. You need to get this pully slid down because there are belt keepers stamped in the tractor frame or engine base, that wont allow you to get the belt off or put a new one on. If you use a pry bar to “help” the pully slide down, be careful not to pry too hard, the pully is soft, and will bend. If this happens the tractor will be jerky or worse.
Now after you decide you cant get it off without destroying it, and please stop just short of that. There is a way to take a short cut. Remember if you bend the pully and it is truely stuck, you will have to remove the engine and use a torch and cut it off. After that you will have to replace the lower engine oil seal too.
With the remove the engine statement, I was refering to disconnecting everything ( fuel lines, starter cable, exaust, throttle and choke cables). Now I am refering to making your belt replacement easier by lifting the engine and leaving the pully on…..only if you cant remove it.
First remove the 4 mounting bolts under the tractor securing the engine. Next use a prybar and pry the engine up, only about 2 inces just enough to remove the drive belt. Then install the new one the same way. Then reverse the process. You may have to wiggle the exaust pipe back into the muffler.
Hope this helps

Honda GX390: Starts OK on idle, idles for 20 seconds or so and dies. Also dies if attempt to increase throttle. Gasoline is new. Cleaned carb and jets – no help. Installed NEW carb, new spacers, new gaskets: SAME PROBLEM, NO CHANGE! Yes, gas is in tank and it’s new. Yes, the gas lever is in the ON position. Yes, it idles with the choke in OFF position. NO it will not run more than a minute, less than that if you attempt to increase throttle. Gas lid vent WORKS; fuel line is clear of obstruction and works fine. ON/OFF switch is ON. Changed oil to proper level with new oil: 10W40; – not over-filled or under filled. It’s 8 years old but only used about 10 to 15 hours per year since new. Nothing I’ve done has changed a thing (except drain cash from my pocket). What does it take to make this machine work again?

I have a model LTH130 42 inch cut mower and just installed a new elect. clutch and started mowing grass and it began to feel like it was bogging down and I stopped the engine and the belt was very hot. What is going on now?
ANSWER : Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
See this link and locate your deck:

Make sure you have the belt routed correctly. ALSO make sure that you do not have it flipped 180 deg over the idler.
I recommend that you unhook the belt from the mower deck pulleys and try rotating the blades. A bad blade bearing can cause a belt to heat up. Of any of the blades are hard to turn by hand that blade bearing will need to be replaced. Check the idler pulley also.
If after checking the above you continue to experience a problem just respond here and I will help you.
